I didn't get it...
would someone please explain it to me?
RayneeDay
May 28, 2002

Einat, most young ones here in America learn a basic rule in english very early. When spelling a word that has and I and E together you follow a simple rule to make sure you spell it correctly, I before E accept after C. An example would be receive vs. siege. Notice that when there is no letter C directly proceeding the IE combination the I comes first. But when the C does proceed the IE combination it is spelled EI. It is just a quick easy little saying to help grade school kids remember how to spell.

May 26, 2008

"Eye" is before "E" and "Except" is after "See (C)".

Good teaser.

Thanks for the explanation Trillionaire. I didn't get it either. Of course I know the i before e except after c rule, but didn't realize it was the answer to this rebus. That seemed too easy. Silly me.

I usually can't get rebuses at all, but this one I got immediately! Very cute!

May 26, 2008

I think the rebus should be

EyeESeeExcept

instead of

Eyeeseeexcept.

Without the capitalizations its a bit confusing.

My goodness Trickster! It's easy enough as it is. With capitals there is no challenge at all. Fun teaser just as it is.

May 29, 2008

The rule doesn't work. What about "their" (as in 'their house')? The rule should read I before E except after C and also except after H!
GreenApples27*nz*
May 26, 2011

But, there's also the word "weird" which isn't after "H". Good teaser!

@ Castillion and GreenApples27 and any others who have noticed there are exceptions to the rule I before E except after C.
As mentioned before, this rule is for little kids, and when they are taught this they are also usually told that there are some exceptions. As my chemistry teacher would say, "there are always exceptions to the rule".
Nice teaser!

Hi, everyone .....

Hope you didn't miss me too much ...

Did a bit of weekend partying with the fam at one of our annual "reunion" thingies.

And ... (surprise, surprise) .... A REBUS for TOTD (I was just yesterday discussing Braingle and rebuses with a couple of Dad's bros who had been on Braingle years ago when Dad was swingin' so much with the rebuses.)

The interested fam members said I should "abandon" the "hardnosed" approach to Braingle improvement and simply give members something FUN to do that would - at the same time- possibly benefit the revival of Braingle.

Soooo ... here goes .....

ANNOUNCING ...

FRAKKers ... !!!!

Failed Rebus Action Kommando Klub

F-R-A-K-K

Still in the "raw state" ... but check in later today for more.

Meantime .... THIS one (this TOTD) is sooooooooooooo serendipitous I cannot believe it.

Perfect for a starter.

I love it and gave it HIGH marks for both difficulty and fun.

Same ... more later today.

DON'T miss out ...

F - R - A - K - K
