Brain Teasers
Road Trip
Melissa sat in the office of Detective Sing.
"I met a man yesterday," she said. "He's trying to raise funds for Kids with Cancer by driving virtually non-stop around Australia. He says he did it last year; drove to all the Australian Capitals in two and a half weeks. He says that he wants to try and break that record this year, and that if he does, the Australian Government will give a $10,000 donation to the charity. The only problem is that he needs funds to pay for the car, petrol and food. He's asked me for an initial donation of $2,000. What should I do? Should I give it to him?"
Detective Sing paused for a moment. "You could give him the money," he said. "But I don't think it will help the charity."
Why?

Answer
Australia consists of six States and two Territories. However, much like America, one of these States lies off the mainland. Tasmania (and therefore its capital, Hobart) cannot be driven to. To get to Tasmania you must cross the Bass Strait (a large body of water).Any claims to have done so must be fraudulent.

Good one!!!
I would never have thought of it.
My first idea was that there's only ONE capital of Australia. Proved me wrong, huh?

Only people in Australia would know this.
i agree with ferretgirl....only people in australia would know this...and who knew that tasmania was part of australia & that it was off the mainland?? wow...
we just learned about aulstralia in class and i new this. (btw im from america and i new this) awsome teaser.
nice teaser, if you know austrailia.
You don't even have to know about Australia, just have common sense...
The teaser was basically guess work. whether you know this country, or any country, distance/time were the issues, whether there were oceans, lakes, or drains. I understood one thing about this teaser, and that was, distance. To drive throughout a territory, stopping at all Capitols is an impossibility, unless you're driving through a very small country, like Germany, then you might be able to stop at all the States', or Counties' Capitols, but not Austry. It is a very large country.
you might be able to do it, if you did it non-stop, which was the idea.
but to be honest i haven't done the maths
but to be honest i haven't done the maths
Good Teaser.
Im From Oz, and aside from Tasmania, it is possible to drive to all the other states and their capitals in this sort of time frame. But with the price of petrol now, no thanks

I knew it had something to do with visiting all the capitols, however I didn't know exactly. Now I do!! Great job!
im from the u.s. but i believe i learned this last year.(im in 8th grade)i got it. it was good
I don't know much about Australia either, but just with a mental picture of the country I knew there was territory offshore!!! Therefore it was logical that he couldn't drive to all the capitals!! Good one sweetime!!
i dont get it
What about cars that drive over water. One just set a speed reacord from England to France? So it could be done.
i thought it wascool
[color-blue]awesome[/color]
oops sorry about that
well done...keep the aussie ones coming!
Got it! For a different reason though! Still on a roll!
I'm a Yank, but I still know that Tasmania is a separate island South of Australia! I also know there is a ferry!
Fun teaser.
Fun teaser.
You can drive your car onto the ferry in Melbourne and off the ferry in Tasmania, so I would still consider that driving when used in this sort of context.
It also says he did it last year, so if it is impossible as the answer says, then he must have been lying, in which case he could have been lying about anything (maybe he would just take the $2k and run?)
But I like the fact that it is about Australia, keep it up ;)

it was ok i guess
I wasn't sure, but I guessed as much.
Yea keep doin 1s about Australia! I know a lot about Australia...but maybe thats coz i live in Australia.
He drove NON-STOP for two and a half weeks?
Another answer...you used the word Virtually. Therefore it could mean he is just be sat in front of his computer for two weeks on a car simulator...thus not needing gas money or even buying a car, pocketing the $2000.
