Brain Teasers
Band Camp VII
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
It was a late day in fall when Mogmatt's band director noticed something strange at practice one day. As he looked from his podium onto the football field where they rehearsed, he saw that, while the rest of the band was in a perfect concert formation with all the players in rows, the sousaphones were in diagonal lines rather than one big line. The director scratched his head and wondered why this was. Since he technically never told them to stay in a line, he couldn't yell at them. But still he wondered, why did they do this?
Hint
The band faced southwest in the correct formation they were practicing in.The director also noticed something different about each sousaphone who was in the front of a diagonal from those in the back of the diagonal.
Answer
The sun was bright and they were using each other's sousaphone's horn for shade. The other instruments didn't have to do this since they could wear a hat. Sousaphone players can't wear hats since the bells usually come right down on their foreheads. The reason that some were still able to stand in the form of the diagonals was because they were wearing sunglasses.

So what is a Sousaphone????
i agree with NTaliesen
cleverly worded but i agree with them
nicely written
Yeah, what is a sousaphone?
did a quick search on google for sousaphone. Its a wind instrument that coils around your shoulder and the big conical sounding portion is either right above the forehead or tilted to the side at the sam level. What I did see though is that it barely interferes with hats, it pushes the brim down just a little nothing more.
A sousaphone is basically a marching tuba. I was glad to see a band teaser!
Good teaser -- as a 'band mom' from long ago, the Sousaphone is a good marching instrument. Depending on the has the band has adopted, some are interferred with and some are not. Many marching band members would do whatever possible for shade LOL I really enjoyed this teaser. Thanks!
I thought this was clever! I sort of had it figured out. I didn't think it had anything to do with the lack of wearing a hat though. I searched on google for images and the people I saw were still wearing hats!
Lovely, as a former Band student I got it!
Good teaser. Thankyou! It reminded me of a story my old music teacher told me during a lesson one day. He was directing the Australian RAAF in the 1950s and during a ceremonial parade, the Wing Commander wanted to put ALL the trombone players on charges because they were moving their slides in and out at different times to each other while they played! True story....!
My brother played sousaphone and he and the other players wore berets.
