Answer
12 Feet (2 Fathoms) in a Mark TwainA Mark Twain was an old nautical term used to measure the depth of water. They measured the depth by dropping a rope, marked at 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 fathoms. If the water went to the second mark, it was a "mark twain", twain meaning two.

What's a "Mark Twain"? I've never heard of that term before.
what the heck is a 'Mark Twain'? Maybe this should've been explained in the answer section?
