The Old Monk and the Busy Brother
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
The bell was tolling for vespers when the Old Monk, lost in meditation and moving slowly between the growing shadows in the narrow walkway, was bumped, spun around and nearly sent tumbling down to the cold, stone floor by one of the young brothers hastening down the darkening corridor, rushing to the tolling chapel bell.
"Forgive me Brother. I was late for vespers, and didn't see you here in these shadows. I'm so sorry, so sorry... I'm always too busy to notice things or even to think; there's just too much to do. It's like riding the devil's tail. I'm always late. Late. Late. Late. It's my own personal demon to wrestle with I know, but there's never enough..."
"What's that you're saying?" whispered the Old Monk, in a lazy quiz to quickly silence the young babbling brother. "You have all there is. And there's plenty too, just listen for the pealing. Don't you doubt it, why we're never for an hour without it."
After a long pause and thinking over the Old Monk's words the young brother replied, "True. You're right Brother, often my feet do stir up too much dust and sometimes I miss the bell's calling."
