In the United States Presidential election, Bob Smith ran against David Johnson. The voter-turnout was larger than it had been for many years, however, Smith won with only 300 votes. How could such a low number be enough to grant him Presidency?
Answer
Presidents, in the United States, are not elected by the popular vote, but by the Electoral College. A candidate needs to receive a simple majority of the total votes to be elected. Each state has votes in the Electoral College. The number of votes depends on the number of Senators and Representatives of the state.Bob Smith received 300 votes in the Electoral College, which was a majority, granting him Presidency.

This was well thought out and I loved it. Well done
Cool... Might fool some people if their Civics teacher didnt explain that like a gazillion times to us last year!
I got it! Yay! Nice teaser
In fact in U.S. it even is possible to be President in case you got less electoral botes all in all than your opponent did... as was seen 8 years ago with Gore and Bush!
Strange form of democracy
Strange form of democracy
Once again my knowledge of US politics floors me in a teaser.
Isn't it great how a country can call it's self a democracy, but your vote is not worth the same as someone in another state? Strange how a "liberal" state like california, has so few votes compared to it's population size.
This is a strange way to vote for a president. But, most ALL of the government teachers, will gladly explain this to you, until you wonder *why* do we vote in this country. Fantastic teaser! Keep them coming.
We just studied this is my Civics class.
I actually knew the answer for once. lol

I liked it!
Also strange about American style democracy is that the president has power of veto over bills passed by the properly elected representatives of the legislative assembly AND congress. If we ever get rid of our monarchist state, the big fear many of us have here is that it may be perverted into this American style republic and not many want that! It is one reason why the monarchist system has been allowed to stay.
