Brain Teasers
Expensive Book
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A man had a book that was worth $40,000. There were only 2 books in existence. He threw it in the furnace, reducing it to a pile of soot. Why did he do this?
Answer
The man destroys the book because he has two, and by only having one, the value goes up.Hide Answer Show Answer

I've heard this one before.
But I like it, it's clever. The man is smart. =]

its kool
the only way it would be beneficial to that man is if the value doubled. Would it really go up that much if it was already that rare and expensive?
Greedy s*d. What a dreadful example to set for others!
I got the answer right away think next time for something challenging!
Blondebookworm, the only way he would have profited is if the value MORE THAN doubled. Otherwise, he would just have had the same net worth...
yeah you're all right, lemme change some stuff
really intelligent
Clever I like it.
Ths man is either extremely smart or stupid.
Smart: if the book's value goes over $80,000
Stupid: the book's value doesn't go over $80,000 which is more logical

Does it say that he had both of them?
I'm confused.
I'm confused.
i agree wit smartie...even if it did double exactly he would still get 80000.....lol
I hope the book value goes up more than double and I also hope nothing happens to the one copy that is left. In my opinion, this is not a smart man.
okay, since it was listed in the Trick section, I had to guess that he had the other one, but boy what a silly man.
If he was really that greedy he could have done much better.
Since he had the only two copies left, he could have easily faked burning one of them. Thus making the other the only one left.
He then dishonestly sells it as such, only to "find" the other copy later on.

Well, I loved it. Keep up the great Teasers!
Enjoyable, quick, easy. Good job
I liked it!
But I thought it was something more like:
He stole the book, and didn't want whoever owned the book to find out it was him, because if he sold it, people would find out

Easy but fun and not stupid.
i thought the answer read "because he was two"
Makes sense...It's what I'd do.
clever.
I got it right!!!!! Thank ya!
True, it makes sense now!
Very clever!!
Easy! I got it in one guess!
What a dumby!
LOL FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO SAID IT WOULD HAVE TO DOUBLE, THE PRICE WOULD HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED AT THE PRICE OF 40,000 DOLLARS.lol
lol he's a dumbo. He should just SAY he lost one and keep the other one hidden. some people in puzzles just aren't smart today
Am I the only one who thought the book was worth $40,000 because of the *pages trimmed with 20 carat gold*, and who ignored the fact that there were only 2?
He might have burned it to get the gold in the soot.
He might have burned it to get the gold in the soot.
That should be 24 carat gold.
