Menacing Matchsticks IV
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
You will need eight matchsticks for this teaser.
Take six matchsticks and arrange them into a 2x1 rectangle. Next, take another matchstick and add it to one of the long sides of the matchsticks. Finally, take the last matchstick and add it to the other long side, in the same direction as the last matchstick you have laid. You should now have what looks like a glass of water.
Now, how can you increase the volume of the water by moving only two matchsticks?
You cannot:
Move the uppermost horizontal matchstick.
Submerge the matchsticks in the water.
Bend, break, or stack the matchsticks.

Hint
Instead of trying to increase the volume of the water in the glass, try to increase the volume of water in general. Also, this teaser only works for water. It would not work with any other liquid.Answer
Take the center matchstick of the left side of the glass and place it horizontally under the glass. Next, move the center matchstick on the right side of the glass and place it vertically in the "U" formed by the top three matchsticks.Rotate the view 90 degrees clockwise. It should read ICE.
Water is the only liquid known that increases its volume when turned to ice.

totally kool
Sounds like you got this one out of a party trick book! Very original!
average
It was ok...but it does sound like it's from a book.
I read I, C, backwards E...
Wow, I don't know about you guys, I absoloutly loved this teaser! It's definitely going in my favorites. Very creative.
Does anyone here atuall have matchsticks at their computer?
you keep getting me with these teasers but it was still good.
I LOVED IT! All the matchsticks teasers are so cool!
Actually, i keep a book of matches by my computer just in case I see a great teaser like this.
I thought you coulda made a full looking glass, I.E a rectangle using all of the matchers.
*matches
you know, actually u could take the two matches that marks the level of water in the glass and move them outside so it becomes like this:
|__ __|
|__ __|
|__ __|
|__ __|
Didn't have any matchsticks 2 use
That was smart!
MAG AN: I think your example has the same volume-- 2 toothpicks X 1 toothpick of water. I guess it's not really volume unless it's 3 dimensional, in which case i guess your example would work-- a shorter but wider glass would hold more water (if the glass were round)
My solution similar to yours was to move the bottom of the glass to the top and the water line to the middle of the bottom two toothpicks. i.e.:
_
|_| | |
| | | |
|_| |-|
so, if you flipped the glass over, it would have 1/2 toothpick more of water.
Best answer i could come up with was drop two toothpicks in an actual glass of water, raising the volume in the glass by a marginal amount. (about the same marginal amount as freezing the water.

lol, needed to use ascii space characters. looks like hiroglyphics! oh well...
I didn't have match sticks either... I used paper clips! ;)
or you could do this
from this:
_
l_l l l
l l l l
l_l l_l i didn't move the top one up i just moved the 2 ones on top to the the bottom and slid the bottom horizontal down

i got it without toothpics or matchsticks or anything. i just didn't re-arange anything
fun fun fun!
Sneaky, dirty, and nasty!
Now let me take the hook out of my mouth!

Good teaser. Water acually expands 9% when it freezes. I love science, more specificaly chemistry and water science, so when I saw it makes the word ice I didn't have to read the last line to understand it.
But it never said there was water in the glass, it just said there was what looked like a water glass...
Oh, nevermind, I get it now! Awesome!
How iz dis a trick? wudnt it b under science?
