The Tricky Pope
In September 1276, an Abbot came to see the new Pope, John XXI, claiming that he had a papal bull, stating that his abbey was to be given vast territories.
While reading the bull to the new Pope, the Abbot stated that it had been given to him personally by John XX.
The Pope had the Abbot taken out and removed him from his office.
Why?

Hint
It is NOT because John XX was already dead long before the Abbot could have been born.Answer
He couldn't have had the bull from John XX, since there has never been a Pope called John XX, due to a mess in the numbering system during the 11th century.John XIX was in office until October
1032, and the next pope called John was John XXI who was pope from September 1276 until May 1277.

Good teaser!

i can't believe i got this one! i said that there wasn't a pope john XX in 1276, but i didn't know there was no pope john XX period. good teaser
Excellent stuff!
Why do people use spaces and asterisks to get around the foul language standards. Do they seriously think that their mommies won't know what they mean?
I got this one right, but it is unlikely that an Abbot would not know who the previous Pope was. This one is implausible.
