The Flat Tire
Logic puzzles require you to think. You will have to be logical in your reasoning.
At Duke University, there were four sophomores taking Organic Chemistry. They had done so well on all the quizzes, midterms, labs, etc., that each had a solid "A" for the semester.
These guys were feeling pretty confident the weekend before finals, so they decided to go up to the University of Virginia to party with some friends. They had a great time; however, after all the partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday.
Rather than take the final on schedule Monday morning, they decided to find their professor after the exam and let him know why they had missed it. They explained that they had gone to UVA for the weekend with the plan to come back to study, but, unfortunately, they had had a flat tire on the way back, hadn't brought a spare, and hadn't been able to get help for a long time.
As a result, they had missed the exam.
The Professor thought it over and then agreed that they could make up the final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied hard that night and went in the next day at
the appointed time.
The professor placed the four friends in separate rooms, handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem, worth 5 points. It was something simple about free radical formation.
"Cool," thought all four simultaneously, each one in his separate room, "this is going to be easy." Each finished the problem and then turned the page.
On the second page was written: "For 95 points answer this question:
The final question proved the professor knew the students were lying. What was the question?

the students could have still aswered and
tricked the professor. by simply saying
left or right tire and not stating front
or back.for any answer could be correct
without stating the position from which
the tire was viewed.example when in the car
driver side is left but standing faceing the car

I saw this joke in Mad Magazine 20 YEARS AGO. I'm in a critical mood this morning, so I'll say this: Too many words, PeaceJo!! Shorten it up, for God's sake!

To od-1 - I see your point but I think the point of the teaser is that the professor wasn't fooled by their lies and he proved it with his question. Besides, at the university level they would know that they weren't getting 95 points for writing "left".

To bobbrt - Hmm - I never considered that God would care about the length. Thanks for pointing it out! (And I know it's not original - I just thought it was fun and wanted to share it.)

Ya know, this is more an urban legend than a teaser.

Good Riddle, I was thinking it had to do with the UVA. Very clever, but why Duke University? NC baby!!!!!!!!!

Not bad, but it is a popular urban legend.

Peace, don't pay no attention to them, you know as well as I that some people just love to nit-pick, I for one had never heard this particular urban legend and I enjoyed it. Rock on!
BTW I've addressed this problem of unneccesary negative feedback on the message board come check it out.

It's been three months since I made my first comment on this teaser. In that time I've grown - I'm more mature, more tolerant, and the hateful voices in my head have ceased to torment me. I now know that a 20-year old joke CAN make a good teaser. I now know that patience is a virtue, and that some things are better if you wait more for them. This teaser wasn't too wordy - it eloquently unfolded, blossomed even, to the mind bending parable that I have come to know and love. Congratulations, PeaceJo, on a job well done. I only wish that I could go back and change the "fun" rating I gave your teaser, as I'm sure the younger, more foolish me gave it a low score.

For me, this has to be one of my more favourite posers ever. One of those whose answer reeks simplicity yet it is hidden amidst the possibilities of the unfolding story. The cleverness of the answer is compounded by the classic teaser response if you couldn't solve it of "OF COURSE!!!". Loved it (in case you were wondering).
