It's a reference to what happens when a field goal or after touchdown extra point kick is made and the ball goes between the upright ends of the goal posts.

Uprights? Wait, there's a pun on it right. From your comment, I get the goal upright. What does it have to do with the letters? (Sorry, I don't play much of football)

The letters when put together, spell the word right multiple times, thus rights. They are going up, thus, uprights and they are split into two sections, thus, 'splitting the uprights'. Hope it makes sense now.

Took me a while to figure it out as well, but it really is a great rebus, I'm just not a football fan either, so I had to really think this one through. Thanks for posting.

Brilliant!!! I needed the hint but I did get it then. Maybe I would have gotten it, had I read the title... I love rebuses like this, very cryptic, but very exact. So many are too simple and straightforward, and many others are wildly flailing attempts.
