Addition: Maybe there should have been a hint, it was very hard without it.
What about 101 as a start number? (one hundred And one)
Very nice teaser!
I tried to work it out mathematically, and was leaning toward 1 being the answer using a convoluted logarithmic function. I finally resorted to searching OEIS for the sequence 3, 9, 27, 2, 0 and came up with http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/ A114181 which is [log10(n)] of http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/ A029722, which is your sequence.

Great teaser! I was stumped. Based on the question, should the fifth integer in the series be 0, "zEro" (i.e. rather than 1, "onE")?
