Brain Teasers
Just Enough Time to Deliver the Message
Cryptography
In Cryptography teasers, a phrase or expressions has been encoded in some way (frequently by replacing letters with other letters). You need to figure out the encoding method and then decode the message to find the answer.Cryptography
Justin Case and Auntie Bellum are fellow con artists who deliver coded messages to each other to communicate. Recently Auntie Bellum was put in jail for stealing a rare and expensive diamond. Only a few days after this, Justin Case sent her a friendly letter asking her how she was. On the inside of the envelope of the letter, he hid a code. Yesterday, Auntie Bellum escaped and left the envelope and the letter inside the jail cell. The police did some research and found the code on the inside of the envelope, but they haven't been able to crack it. Could you help the police find out what the message is?
This is the code:
llwatchawtfeclocklnisksundialcirbetimersool
This is the code:
llwatchawtfeclocklnisksundialcirbetimersool
Hint
It was a TIMED escape.Answer
The message was "loose bricks in left wall." The message was put backward with words related to time in between. This is how the message looks when separated:
ll watch awtfe clock lnisk sundial cirbe timer sool
If you take out watch, clock, sundial, and timer, this is what is left:
llawtfelniskcirbesool
Look at this backwards and this is what you have:
loose bricks in left wall
Auntie Bellum took out the bricks and escaped in the night. Then, she put the bricks back where they were.

Very good teaser. You almost got me but I figured it out just before I hit the answer!
Hope you like my newest teaser!
you had me baffled! Good job... I really enjoyed this teaser
I was on the right tracks. I noticed there were clocks and sundials etc. hidden but i didn't think about reading the message backwards. great teaser. I'll add it to my favs.
awesome teaser
great teaser.... i was way off i thought that it had something to do with time because i saw the words in there but you got me... good one!
Wasnt Really That Hard, And I Dont Suppose You To Much Time In the story Line, The mix words can be harder but you still put creative in it am not gonna be a credict, so i still give a god job and Decently Hard For People Who Dont Understand Minor Codeing.
yay i got it! well, i looked at the hint but that's understandable, right...?
have to say that was an intriguing one. Nice.
i liked it, i thought it had something to do with time, and then i looked at the hint, and yeah but i didnt get it. just thought it had to do with time. but good one.
I knew that there was something to do with time, but I didn't now that the message was spelled backwards. Great Job!
All I was seeing was words thats related to timepieces, I was clueless as to anything being stuck in there bacwards.
ditto tigger
Hi:
Thoug this kind of teasers are difficult for me to "crack", I enjoy them. I like short stories. This is a good one. quack - quack

Excellent!
I need help just figuring out Frost1 250's comment!
Really good teaser, Nancy Drew would be proud of you!

That was a really awesome teaser!
That was a great one! Like most other people, I did see the "time" words in there -- but I didn't think to take them out or read the message backwards.
This one's definitely in my favorites!

wow that was hard, I only got the time words
Thanks everybody for the positive feedback.
Man, that was hard. I wouldn't have gotten it in a million years. Keep em comin'.
Very good teaser!! However, I didn't get the answer right.
Very good teaser! And difficult!
Very good teaser! And difficult!
It was ok.
whoa that was too hard i gave up on it.... but it was good...
Swordoffury, I loved this. Didn't get anything but the time words, but I enjoy them even more when I see how obvious the answers are and I'm clueless..
Jul 26, 2005
it was
All I could see was watch, clock, sundial, and time.
I WAS BLINDED THE WHOLE TIME!

Thanks smarty blondy (and everyone else)! Happy that you liked it.

I know this is totally late, but I had to leave my bragging on here for posterity. I GOT IT!!! On the first try, too!
I don't know what clicked in my head, but I thought, "What if I ignore the obvious words?" Wrote it out, started crossing out the words I could see, and almost got stuck on "timer" (couldn't decide if it was "time" or "timer").
Then I looked at what was left and at first, I thought I was going to have to find more words to cross out, but then it just popped out at me.
When I saw that I got it right, I thought about how the police in the story were pretty lame if I could figure it out and their crack team of experts couldn't!
Great teaser! Another great addition to my faves list!

smartyblondy, you need another m...ymmonth
the puzzle was lots of fun thanks ilike reading the comments & have to agree with redneck woman.what was that???
This was fun even if i did get stuck on the obvious
I didn't get it, but it was still fun!
THAT WUZ AWESOME! Great job! Definitely going in my faves!
FUN! FUN! FUN!
Easy, but as usual, clever & nicely done.
easy but good
I tried this once 'South of the border', used reversed masonry to get out of my cell, but just ended up butt backwards in front of a firing squad. Fun teaser.
Lots of fun and very clever! I agree with redneckwoman. It read like something out of Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. Thanks for submitting. PS: You can always count on OCH (Old China Hand)
for a good laugh in the morning!

faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHa ha, coach! This was a good one, SoF! I wish I was as advanced as the obviously very advanced code-breaker who commented above at the very beginning, about "minor codeing". I've noticed a popular code on Braingle is to misspell so many words so badly that the words become unrecognizable! lol!
Actually, with this one, the hint threw me off, because then it made me think the msg.would about what time to escape! I actually had looked backward
but wasn't looking at the right groups of letters. Thanks!

revelcbigtonsondabfibtaifllatall,,,with 2 and 3 letter words taken out, total 5, rest is my answer?
This was interesting.Would have to say good teaser, because it sure stumped me.
I almost got It, I was on to something, But then just gave up, Good Job
I saw the words, but couldn't figure it out. Time to hang it up!
Too hard for me, but I had a great time trying to figure it out before reading the answer...
Totally Awesome teaser! I didn't think of mixing forward with backward spellings of the words. And then, the clues can help too much... It was tough for me, this morning. Keep up the terrific work.
It was fun Sherlock. Thanks.
I saw the hidden words, and then it was easy!
Very good teaser!
AHHH! my brain got teased!
I always give up too early on these. Good teaser.
enjoyed it...didn't get itbut liked it anyway. great job
GREAT TEASER!!! I loved this. Thanks.
that was really good.....i didnt get it....first time 4 everythin i guess
That was enjoyable... I like it when things just "come to me." I saw the obvious words, thought aha those must mean something, so I copied and pasted the text into a word processor, bolded the time-related things, and the "sool" at the end made me think of "loose", so I kept reading backwards.......
trockitogtreeidlakena
yay for me! Glad I didn't look at the hint, it might've thrown me off!
oh and I had so much fun, I solved the ones in the comments too....
smartyblondy,
you're missing an m in secondymmonth!
underherfeet,
one of your five words isn't a 2 or 3 letter word!

so i ddn't get it... ah, well, gr8 tragedies happ'n all the tym... jk... neway, it was rili good... the only thing i got out of it was "sundial"... haha...
I got it right away! It made my day! Thanks for the fun teaser!
Great one! Couldnt guess how to go about cracking the code!
I heart this teaser!! LOL
Nice!
Has anyone ever played the game Mindtrap? If not, you should...but i digress....this teaser is a blatant ripoff of one of the puzzles in that game....WORD FOR WORD....
nice job indeed....you fooled all but one...
nice job indeed....you fooled all but one...
besamishuevos, I don't see how my teaser could be in that game since this is a completely original teaser I came up with. Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!
This was very hard for me . iam not very observant maybe i can learn
Okay you got me again.
Almost had it, but no cigar.
SOF that was great. I did see all of the references to time and I had thought about reading the teaser backwards. But of course, stupid me, I didn't reove the time pieces before my attempt. Great job. More please?
Very good! Thanks, SoF!
Hey, besamwhatever- Accusing SoF of plagiarism (that means copying someone else's work) is vicious and mean, and if you can't PROVE IT, you shouldn't say it, especially not in a public format. If you really had a case, you should PM SoF or the webmaster with your EVIDENCE. Also, has it ever occurred to you, besablahblah, that two people could come up with a teaser based on the same word or name without one copying the other?
How very, very RUDE!
I don't get it. What do those time pieces have to do with loose bricks or the message being backwards?
They don't. It's just part of the code to take out those time pieces.
Took me less than a minute and no hint. CHA! ;D
Added it to my favorites! Hard
Finding the words was easy, but I never thought of discarding them, or reading the rest backwards. Great teaser. Love it.
I didn't get it...my brain isn't going this early on a Sunday. Great job!
The extra words were obvious to me, so I just took them out, when I realized they were all the same, but didn't mean anything. This one didn't take me very long to decipher. Thanks!
This code is from the Deltora Quest series right??
During a particularly boring winter, I learned to write backwards ... made it easy to read the code. ... who'd a thunk that writing backwards would ever be useful, (other than winning bar bets)
Easy - I'd hate to live in a town with cops who couldn't figure this one out. (But fun, too!)
I only got the time words.
I'd still be stuck in that jail cell.
fun teaser. I thought the inclusion of four timepieces would have some bearing on the coded answer, like "meet me at 4 o'clock" but it was still clever.
I got it. Thanks, because I'm trying to practice my cryptography.
Like everyone else I got the words in it, but never looked at the left overs or read them backwards. However I am wondering who got into the jail without anyone seeing them and loosened the brick so she could escape.
nicely done; fun and took a minute or two...thanks
Fun teaser - just hard enough to make me work a little bit to solve it, but not so hard that I gave up!
I surprised myself. Solved this in less than 2 minutes.
This is a terrific teaser. It is fleshed out nicely with a story. The code was sufficiently obscure to be interesting. I saw the pattern fairly quickly, but still had to try to read the backwards message around the inserted words, which was surprisingly difficult for me. Well done!
i liked it bc it has some logic in it if the other guy went to jail or prison (they are different) they would know but I'm not going to explain it all bc I would be a party pooper if I did it was awesome i knew the answer bc I made the same type before irl when I was younger but mine was so hard not even my teacher knew it took her more then 27 weeks to get 1 tiny clue (it took her a couple of years to find out)

That was fun, and not too hard, thanks!
I noticed the watch, clock, and sundial, but got stumped there had to look at the answer. It's pretty smart though.
Nice one, SoF!
