Written by Mentor Williams, "Drift Away" was originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz. Approximately one year after Kurtz's version was recorded, Dobie Gray covered the song and took it to the fifth spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has since been covered by many other artists, including: Ike and Tina Turner, Kenny Chesney, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Waylon Jennings, John Denver, Michael Bolton, Bon Jovi, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, and Uncle Kracker.
