Turning Points 2How well do you know the turning points of the United States? |

#3 WWayne is quite correct about the age of the United States. The "four score and seven years" of the Gettysburg Address refers to the Declaration of Independence, not the legal formation of the union. One could argue that the ninth state's ratification retroactively formed the USA from the date of Delaware's ratification, but it still leaves the US short of the claimed 85 years.
#2 Since the Battle of New Orleans was fought after the end of the war, how does one call it "in" the war. "Of" the war, perhaps, but not "in" it.
#6 You might mention why the answer is 11, but there are 13 stars on the flag: teh Confederacy also claimed Missouri and Kentucky.
#7 You might mention that the worst fire was the Great Peshtigo Fire (1871, on the same day as the Great Chicago Fire).
Being Canadian I have always loved American History. I have just improved my knowledge. Thanks for the great trivia. I would have thought that being American you would all post a perfect score. ![]()
D+ for me! Pretty sad, I know. But I clearly thought that I was gonna get an F! I don't like history. ![]()
WWayne, technically you are correct however, it is well known the colonies that would later become the United States declared independance in 1776 so by that train of thought 85 years is also correct, I suppose it is all in the interpretation of the question. ![]()
104archer, not all Americans WANT to learn or know about their history..
they are happy being sheeple..
10/10 and I only guessed at #8.. I don't remember learning anything
about that when I was in school.. Which was a long time ago.. ![]()
ok If a score is twenty years and seven , then how do you get eighty five years? I get 87. Got a A on test, but I wondered about the twenty and seven"
Good quiz - 9/10 - missed #9. For sleepyjean: You are right that 4 score and 7 equals 87; Lincoln's Gettysburg Address happened in 1863 - 2 years after the start of the Civil War.
I always learn something from these quizzes. I love to learn it is a lifelong pursuit.
sleepyjean: Because Gettysburg (the "address" of which is the source of the 'fourscore and seven' quote) was in November, 1863 (87 years after 1776). The civil war started in 1861, 2 years earlier.
pyromaniacs: for #8, you didn't have to remember that Delaware was first to ratify. You just had to remember that the Delaware state quarter was the first in the series.
9/10. (I missed the one about the number of confederate states; I thought it was 13 too. Learned they *claimed* 13 but that two of the states never actually seceded from the union. I love education!
Good quiz!!
8/10. Missed the number of Confederate States of America, and didn't remember that Maine was once part of Massachusetts. Still, not too bad for somebody 60 1/2 years out of high school. I did take American History in college, of course, but I must have missed those two days, out with a hangover. ![]()
Great quiz!!! Love history, geaography and Bible quizes. Keep them coming. 10/10 ![]()
