"Walking the Dog" was originally recorded in 1963 by Rufus Thomas.

Yes, it pays to be older. I didn't know that most of these had been covered. We had fun with our daughter in the late 1980s, as she learned that about 10% of her favorites were remakes. She thought I was really cool because I had original LPs of "Thick as a Brick" and "Aqualung".

And yes, Walking the Dog is older than Aerosmith. If you want a harder one, try the person who originally sang "Unchained Melody" (theme song from the movie "Ghost").

To the best of my recollection, "The Twist" was originally recorded by The Midnighters and as previously noted "Walkin' The Dog" is by Rufus Thomas.

Minor correction, that's Hank Ballard & The Midnighters (not the white group known as the midniters)

to norcekri Unchained Melody was done by the Righteous Brothers.
Too easy for me but liked the subject. Would like to see a tougher one. I work as a stagehand and even got one of the tour guys for Asleep At The Wheel on a question of this type (Ballad of the Alamo he said was an AATW original; I informed him that Marty Robbins recorded it - early 60's)
