In the happy town of Minuscule, population 411 or 412, depending on who does the count, four good citizens ran for the office of Mayor. To see who became the Minuscule Mayor, or better, the Mayor of Minuscule, see the clues below.
Candidates: Owen, Edith, Nora, George
Location of major speech: store, school, barbershop, saloon
Number of people in audience: 8, 12, 20, 40
Length of speech: 15, 20, 30, 60 minutes
Number of final votes received: 13, 26, 33, 52
Clues:
1. It was only coincidental that George's speech was as many minutes long as the number of other people there in the store.
2. Edith's hour-long speech was unplanned--she had gotten in an argument with the bartender. There were twelve people besides Edith there that morning. (None of them were listening, but that doesn't matter).
3. Nora gave her main speech at the school. It came right before the school's Saturday band concert, at which there were 40 people.
4. The candidate who spoke for 20 minutes got 6 more votes than the number of minutes he spoke, which was twice as many votes as the one who spoke for an hour received.
5. Owen's 15-minute speech was to inform his listeners that he was withdrawing his candidacy in favor of his wife, Nora, who was runner-up in the race for votes.
