Greek Mythology
Trivia brain teasers have some element of trivia in them, but they are not just pure trivia questions.
Complete the series by making a selection from the pool.
Series: Hermes, Aphrodite, Gaea, Ares, Zeus, Cronus, Uranus, Poseidon, ?
Pool: Athena, Dionysus, Eros, Hades, Hephaestus, Hera
Answer
The series is the equivalent Greek names for the planets, which are Roman. When the Romans assimilated Greek mythology, they renamed many of the Greek gods.
Mercury = Hermes
Venus = Aphrodite
Earth = Gaea *
Mars = Ares
Jupiter = Zeus
Saturn = Cronus
Uranus = Uranus **
Neptune = Poseidon
thus
Pluto = Hades
* Although earth is not a Roman god, Gaea is Mother Earth in Greek mythology.
** The Romans did not change the name of the Greek Uranus.

| I like that one. But what threw me off was Gaea. I was going with the Greek and Roman names, but then Gaea wasn't a god, so I rejected that idea.

| Great teaser... i thought of everything else except the Roman names those gods are also reffered to as. Mythology's not something I study often, so your teaser had me searching and searching and searching... after all the searching , I still missed the answer. Wow, it's obvious after you read the answer... the other thing I found in my research ,though, was also that each god mentioned has an unclear origin of birth. It was mind-boggling. |

| I LIKE. NOTHING BETTER THAN GREEK MYTHOLOGY. |
Barticus
Nov 03, 2005
| As far as being a puzzle, it was fine, but I'm nitpicking your scholarship. Uranus is the Latin name, but if you're talking about him as a Greek God, it should be spelled Ouranos or Uranos. Cronos (with a kappa) is a Titan, Chronos (with a chi) is a God. The Romans didn't rename the Gods. They were existing God legends, which the Romans matched up to similar Greek Gods. And we can argue until the end of Chronos (time) whether Pluto is a planet.
But for the purposes of a trivia test, the question works. |

| Barticus strikes me as the sort of person who plays along with Jeopardy! on TV and gets all the answers right. And I mean, ALL of them.
Don't get me wrong, I play along too, but I'll get maybe half the questions right. |
