Spazy Croonerisms
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
A spoonerism is a pair of words that can have their initial sounds switched to form new words. The pairs need only sound the same, not necessarily be spelled the same (power saw & sour paw, horse cart & coarse heart). There may sometimes be one or two connecting words (kick the stone & stick the cone, king of the rats & ring of the cats). Given the following definitions, what are the spoonerisms?
1) no-cost fish lures & honey shipment
2) leaping legumes & colliding dungarees
3) crustacean movement & criminal sunscreen
4) baseball term & seasonal pig
Answer
1) free bait & bee freight
2) jumping beans & bumping jeans
3) lobster motion & mobster lotion
4) ball four & fall boar

| Didn't get the last one. This was a very American one. The most I know of base ball is it's something like rounders, and although I realised that 'fall' is American for 'autumn' I still didn't work out the answer. Sorry, I'm just too English |

| I have just been informed that I have been rude to everyone when using capital letters.
I apploogize. I am so used to seeing them on, when I use the computer after my roomate, who leaves them on all the time to make it easer for him to see.
I will be more careful, I didn't mean to offend anyone by shouting.

| Does everyone know about Canon William Archibald Spooner, history professor and warden of New College, Oxford for many years and supposedly given to unintentional transpositions of initial word sounds, though New College's web-site history denies this. Most spoonerisms attributed to him are apocryphal, but a few (rightly or wrongly) are attested -- e.g. to a student he was dismissing, "you have deliberately tasted two worms and you can leave Oxford by the next town drain," and announcing a hymn in chapel, "Kinquering Congs their titles take." |

Learningchinese, no one has acknowledged your apology. I think it was very nice of you to write it and I think it should be acknowledged and you are certainly forgiven as far as I am concerned. |

| Wow.....I was way off!!!!! The only one I could think of an answer to was the first one.....I thought meat sale/sweet mail. I knew it that meat sale didn't relate to no-cost fish lures but it worked with honey shipment......sort of . Anyway, I'm really bad at these....I should work on it!!!!! |

| Itr was really good. The only one I didn't really like was the lobster motion one because, well, 1) I didn't get the answer right, and 2) I don't really agree with it. It could have have been other answers as well. Great job though |

| I got a couple ,but these were a bit tough for the average person. You smarties can congratulate yourselves. I just think the words could have been a bit better. That's just me though! |

Jun 21, 2012
| The middle two worked well but honey = bee and seasonal = fall were too much of a stretch for me. I even tested out free bait but didn't get there.
The baseball term is reasonable but completely random so it didn't help to have a misleading word in the other pair. Season pig is better IMO, "seasonal" sent me down a path of Christmas or Easter. |
gaylewolf
Jun 21, 2012
| I got two easily and was stumped with the others. Fun and funny, though! Thanks for a good one! |
