Sitting on a Cushion on a Dock

Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.

What am I?

My first is in sound, but not in thunder.
My second is in noise, but not in poise.
My third is in outrage, but not in grater.
My fourth is in whimper, but not in whisper.
My fifth is in squash, but not in squelches.
My sixth is in mutter, but not in murmur.
My seventh is in gosh, but not in gasp.
My eighth is in yelp, but not in yell.
My ninth is in hoarse, but not in harsh.
My tenth is in eerie, but not in fairy.
My eleventh is in bliss, but not in bless.
My last is in splat, but not spilt.

These letters you'll find,
If you place them combined
Gives a word whose meaning (and I'm not joking)
Are words that seem like sounds when they're spoken.

I love that word!

Aug 02, 2005

i love how the hint is just as well written as the riddle itself
Aug 02, 2005

love that word, too.....and the title is cute - but I would have said
"sitting on a cushion in the bathroom"
Aug 02, 2005

the title is from when i was learning the word when i was in grade 6. i remembered it by saying 'on a mat on a pier', but since that would have been a dead give away i thought i'd rephrase it slightly.
glad you like the teaser
Aug 03, 2005

I love saying that word!!!
Great teaser...well thought out!
Aug 03, 2005 has the following definition for onomatopoeia: "The formation or use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to"

While I agree with gosh, and gulp, I have to disagree with almost all of the others. Murmur is even listed as an example in the dictionary. You obviously worked hard on this teaser, but the answer is just plain wrong. Excellent try, though.
Aug 03, 2005

how is the answer wrong?
i agree, not all the words that i used to come up with onomatopoeia (which i now can't remember how to spell) are onomatopoeic, but that doesn't change the fact that the letters spell out onomatopoeia
Aug 03, 2005

My apologies. You're right. I meant to say that the clues were a poor choice to represent the riddle. Perhaps I should quit reading riddles when I firs tget up..
Aug 04, 2005

hehe, that's ok, i thought i'd gone mad - i could have sworn that the letters spelt out onomatopoeia. i did try and use onomatopoeic words, but it's a lot harder than it looks!!
Aug 04, 2005

Excellent riddle, wicked word. I loved it!
Aug 04, 2005

Decades ago there was a radio programme in Rhodesia. The contestant substitued this word for "on a mat a peer".
Aug 06, 2005

Really fun teaser going right into my favorites! loving poetry i got it right after whisper and whimper. Really fun and great teaser i enjoyed it!
Aug 06, 2005

nice, very nice-- my 10th reade teacher taught us a little tune to help us remember how to spell onomatopoeia, i sang it when i figured out the answer!
Aug 06, 2005

that would be 10th grade english teacher-- my brain works faster then my hands
Aug 10, 2005

Nice one sweet! Very creative, I also liked the rhyming in the hint too!
Aug 10, 2005

Sep 13, 2005

I was on the right track (in finding the letters) but I just couldn't figure any word from that letter,,, Of course it's because I didn't know the word onameaetapia (or whatever ) FUN teaser!!!
Dec 07, 2005

Got me!
May 19, 2010

Fun! I got the letters, but could not figure out the word. Good job!
May 19, 2010

The clues were not enough to spell it out explicitly, but there was only one thing that could fit after that.

Nice teaser!
May 19, 2010

I can't believe I got it...a lot of work was obviously put into this teaser! Great job!
May 19, 2010

I like the hint, but it would rhyme more nicely if you said jokin' instead of joking.
May 19, 2010

Great teaser, I also love the word, and it was a worthy task that I enjoyed very much. Thank you.
May 19, 2010

Nice one. Got it based on the hint before solving the puzzle but still enjoyed the idea and implementation.
May 19, 2013

Took pen to paper and learned a new word. Thanks.
May 19, 2013

Started to figure it out then looked at the hint and knew the answer with only the first 3 letters worked out.
May 19, 2013

Took some time, but I prevailed. Nice teaser
May 19, 2013

I solved that one methodically and got it quickly. Kind of surprised at myself. There are some words that are fun to say and this is one of them! I always forget the definition of this word, however. Thanks for a good one!
Auntie Sis good talking with you recently!!
May 19, 2013

Loved this one, and got it right. Ditto, Gayle.
May 19, 2016

May 19, 2016
