the next number can be four, if the numbers shown represent how many letters in the numbers one through eight
I came to same answer '1' by splitting it into 3 different series..
3 4 5 => increment by 1
3 4 5 => increment by 1
5 3 1 => decrement by 2
How does it sound....

My last comment got jumbled up because
there are no new line characters in this window.

Why can't it be that they're the numbers of letters in one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, ...?
It probably was that way intentionally, to throw us off. However, I don't think it's a true series, as there's no guide for the first two numbers of each triplet, except, presumably, that they total less than 11.
That doesn't work, because although 3+3+5=11, 3+5+4 doesn't =11, and neither does 5+4+4.
This should be in groups, like
3,3,5
4,4,3
5,5,?

I also got the answer of '4' for the same reason as others above ... but it's quite common to find several solutions to series questions. That's why teachers need to be careful before marking creative students' answers wrong!
