Brain Teasers
Christmas Choir
Logic-Grid
Logic Grid puzzles come with a handy interactive grid that will help you solve the puzzle based on the given clues.Logic-Grid
The local church is planning a special Christmas choir for their Christmas Eve service this year. This is a new program for the church and they have high hopes for its success. The conductor has designed a creative program using traditional Christmas carols and the singers have practiced for weeks. Four of the singers have solo parts in four different songs. Determine the full name of each soloist, which part of the choir each is in, and the name of the Christmas carol in which each is singing solo.
NOTE: Check hint before you start the logic grid
1. Sherry Sanford didn't sing the solo part in "Silent Night." Bruce didn't sing the solo part in "O Holy Night."
2. The soprano wasn't Ms. Sawyer.
3. "Joy to the World" was not the solo part that Mr. Smith sang in.
4. The tenor sang solo during "The First Noel." Betty was part of the alto section.
5. Mr. Short wasn't a tenor. The bass singer, who wasn't Tom, didn't perform a solo part in "Silent Night."
6. Bruce's solo part was during "Joy to the World."

Way too easy, man!
How about getting a bit tougher on the clues?
I know: this is still a lot harder than any that I've submitted, eh?

Simple, but cool.
I like these that look simple at first, then look as though they're not going to work, then suddenly everything fits!
great teaser! females can sing tenor and even bass though (but i have yet to see a male sing soprano) but for the sake of the teaser, it was helpful
OK not too good at lease but keep them coming
Really easy but pretty good. For all intents and purposes normally sopranos and altos are normally female and tenors and basses are normally males. Has anyone heard of the Vienna Boys, Choir? They used to use surgical means to keep boy sopranos as sopranos.
The last clue was superfluous. However, it was good and fun. About the women singing tenor, that is true. However, when you have 2 men and 2 women, and 4 parts, the men WILL sing tenor/bass and the women WILL sing soprano/alto.
I liked this teaser because it was quick and simple, but fun!
This was the first logic problem I've attempted on here, it was a lot of fun and not too hard, which is good for my first time.
Too many assumptions. Women with very low voices do sometimes sing tenor. There was a female tenor in my church choir. It is possible for men to sing the alto or even the soprano part. It is usually done in falsetto, but it is not unheard of for men to sing in a natural soprano voice...and many male vocal groups include "countertenors"...which for all intents and purposes are sopranos.
it was simple and gave you everything right away
Great teaser. It's like spaghetti missing that pinch of salt. It needed more of a kick of tough. But overall it was a great teaser.
>technically men don't sing soprano. the high that is heard is tenor. Tenor is high for men just as soprano is high for women. But many people have opinions as to how that works. I'm not the world's best musician, but that's what I know or have been taught. Please take no offense. I just thought that might help a bit.<

Nice teaser. I actually did this one on Christmas Eve, after the service and it seemed so perfect! I love seasonal teasers and stuff (I still have the Christmas skin on! ) Keep 'em coming!
easy teaser. good one for how late it is!!!
Hey! Cut ROb a break. He didn't say his clue was infallible, he offered it to help solve the puzzle. Geesh!
Easy, but cute. Some facts were unnecessary, but didn't make it less fun. And I agree that a tenor and bass are male and soprano and alto are female. Plus, for the sake of the teaser, just let it be and don't dig too far. Good job, Rob!!!
pretty easy when i got going
i enjoyed it, fun teaser
This is a linear programming problem, which can be solved with SCIP. The scip model that I used can be found at
