I don't think I would have ever figured this one out. Roman numerals just don't come to mind as a rule. Great riddle and you sure got me. Thanks for posting.

I was with craniac; I got the total 534, and unlike many others I DID think of Roman numerals, but DXXXIV didn't say anything!! You mixed Roman and the WORD FORTY, and THAT I couldn't have thought of!!!
