Cartoon. The word comes from the Italian word "cartone", which means "big paper". "Paper" in Italian is "carta", and the suffix "one" means "large". In painting the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo used "cartoons" to draw the figures he wanted to place on the walls and ceiling of the edifice. These were large pieces of paper on which he had drawn the scenes and personages for a particular "giornata", or "day's work". The word later became "cartoon" in English, which came to mean the drawings we see daily in Garfield, Doonsbury, or Blondie, or in political cartoons depicting some of our elected officials or other well-known persons in interesting situations.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Good teaser.
Very good one! Difficult. The only guess I could come up with was "Magna Carta" fro the "big paper" clue. But I knew that couldn't be right.
