My Masks Show...
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
My masks show satisfaction, taste, and glamour,
Gifts from me, with manhood, grit and strength.
Why do the blind with my mystique enamor?
Regret and slavery lurk along my length!
My vapors strew the stench of gasping death,
Yet millions daily light and fondle me.
I plant disease and pain with every breath,
That young inhale and elders cannot flee!
Smoke and mirrors conjure up the mood
That hucksters loud and blatantly proclaim.
Though suffering and doom both darkly brood!
Are you able after this to guess my name?
HintRemember the Marlboro cowboy?

Answer
A cigarette
The real "benefits" of smoking are slavery to addiction, along with sickness and agonizing death. Plus, smokers pay an ever increasing price for these "advantages" too!
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide are smokers. Around 5.4 million deaths a year are caused by tobacco. 1.2 million in China die from smoking related diseases. Over 443,000 Americans die from smoking annually; 50,000 of these deaths are caused by secondhand smoke.

| The Marlboro Cowboy and Joe Camel were popular advertising icons that were banned a few years ago; that may have been when you were too young to notice them?
I wouldn't want this riddle to be a diatribe, just some facts that not everyone thinks about, and a reminder that the ads still try to show the glamor of lighting up. Even "second hand" smoke is a killer, as the stats show.
So far 8 close members of my family have died from smoking related diseases, including my husband, and (God forbid) perhaps even my daughter.
The good news is, the minute a smoker kicks the butt, his/her lungs begin to clean themselves. Hopefully it isn't too late. |

| Interesting that the "facts" in the original submission of this teaser were completely fabricated. The original submission claimed that a billion people a year died from smoking-related causes. That's almost 20 times as many people as die in a typical year.
I don't think much of people who would smoke, but I don't have a much higher opinion of people on soapboxes who make up "facts". |

| You're right; the bad data I got from a website were way off. the WHO has much better stats. I'm glad the editors caught that boo-boo. |

| great teaser. I can't STAND cigarettes/cigars. It's the stupidest way to live and die. I too have lost loved ones from this insanity. But it was their own choice to suffer the consequences themselves and to allow us to suffer as well. Anyway, great teaser! I like the wording. |

| Granted, it was their choice, but the real impetus came from the tobacco industry. Their ads pushed the culture of lighting up and made smoking look glamorous and sexy. They made it appear that this was the way to look grown up and hooked teenagers that way. By the time the kids grew up and tried to quit it was a daunting task. |
