what does that phrase mean? must be a british thing =)
It means something along the lines of "Well I never expected that" or "Well fancy that"
the reference comes from a time when almost everyone kept a journal, log or diary. If someon was to read it later a lot of things that happened could be expected by what went before. Something that happened and was not expected would turn up in the diary or log and suprise the reader.

As usual, the American equivalent, "one for the books," is much clearer and more appropriate than the British idiom.
