Wy couldn't it be that the trucks were tow trucks carrying already severly damaged cars, and then another tow truck came and they hit each other?

Darn it Spencer, you beat me to it (by a decade or so). I came up with this exact idea and submitted it recently, not realizing that it already existed. I even tried searching to make sure it wasn't on here, but I used the word "carrier" instead of "transporter," so this one never came up.
Great teaser!
