The puzzle is correct, $.25 is two bits, but the one dollar coins that were cut into eighths were made of silver not gold.
Even before inflation, a dollar of gold was less than a two grams. That's at the lower limit of coin sizes, half the weight of a modern dime. I can't see cutting that into eight pieces. A dollar was a half ounce silver coin.
