A spoonerism is a pair of words that can have their initial sounds switched to form new words. The pairs need only sound the same, not necessarily be spelled the same (power saw & sour paw, horse cart & coarse heart). There may sometimes be one or two connecting words (kick the stone & stick the cone, king of the rats & ring of the cats). Given the following definitions, what are the spoonerisms?

1) punched when starting work & discussion about scaling a mountain
2) a container of fibs & a shortage of baked goods
3) hasty vacation & prank gibe
4) a mongoose & artificial precipitation

Technically, a time clock isn't punched-- a time card is. It sounds like splitting hairs, but I couldn't come up with an answer as a result.

I never get spoonerisms. For some reason, I always draw a blank when I try to come up with them. Nice teaser nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

Clock & talk?
Not matching pronunciations where I'm from.
Is it clawk & tawk, or clock and tock?

The last one was hard. I wouldn't have minded a hint, like mentioning Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

AROB Didn't like it before and nothing has changed. I'm not a fan of croonerisms. Hi GiMi & AS

All but #2 were nearly instantaneous for me. For some reason I kept coming up with incompatible rhyming words (box & pox, bag & lag) for that one.

Fun teaser all the same.
auntiesisAus*
Aug 17, 2011

Silly me, still didn't get some of them.
Hi Gayle & doehead.

I wouldn't call #1 a true spoonerism. And for #2--a pack is a container? I love spoonerisms, but could only get numbers 3 and 4.

I guess I did not understand the instructions so had to peek at the first answer to be able to finish the rest. I did not know that about the mongoose either. It was a good one if you understood it.

I know what a mongoose is, my brother always wanted one as a pet when we were kids. (He was, correction, he IS a bit odd).
Took me a bit to get fake snow as I was stuck on thinking rain ... otherwise, I am in the minority it would seem as I enjoy spoonerisms though sometimes I wish they would offer more of a challenge.

Stumped me, but fun trying. for the first one I guessed "climb rock." I pronounce "talk" as one would say "hawk" so unlikely for me to guess that word. Good way to stretch the brain muscle though!
