On Six Feet
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
The following riddle was originally printed in 1867 in "London Society".
On six feet, I am a noxious drink,
Of whose effects you shudder to think.
Change only my second foot, and then
You convert me into a horrible den
Where the culprit, who gave the noxious drink,
Awaits the fate of which you shudder to think.
HintTry reading it with "letters" instead of "feet".

Answer
poison/prison
"On six feet" means a six letter word. The first two lines refer to poison. The next two lines refer to prison. The last two refers to where "the culprit" who gave you the poison would go -- prison.

tick, the prison part says if you change the second "foot" (read: letter) in the word "poison", then you can make it prison (which is a "horrible den").

Well, I'm out of step -- I found the word foot highly misleading.

Interesting but very difficult teaser. After giving it considerable thought I had to give up and look at the answer. Thanks for posting.

I was doing O.K. with understanding the 2nd foot, but for some reason my eyes were playing tricks on me, and I was reading drunk instead of drink. Totally confused me and was unsolveable until I gave up and looked at the answer. Then when I reread it I realized my mistake.
