All that Glitters
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
If you like pretty gems that sparkle and shine,
I invite you to dig in my virtual mine.
My first is purple, fit for a king,
My second is green where Dorothy did her thing.
My third is red, July's birthstone as well,
My fourth is seen in strings and is found inside a shell.
My fifth is hard, pure Carbon and expensive to buy,
My sixth is Crocidolite, striped like the big cat's eye.
Seventh is two words, a man-made fake of April's stone,
Eighth is very dark and found at Lightning Ridge alone.
Now take from each gem, one letter in its turn,
And you will find the stuff for which even the gods yearn.
HintLightning Ridge is in Australia and is famous for being the only place in the world where a certain gemstone is found.

Answer
The gems are
Amethyst
Emerald (Emerald city - Wizard of OZ)
Ruby
Pearl (From inside oyster shell)
Diamond
Tiger's eye
Cubic Zirconium (Fake diamond)
Black Opal
Taking the first letter of Amethyst, second of Emerald etcetera gives
Ambrosia - The food of the gods.

| I like that one. I got the ruby cuz its my birthstone, the emerald because I've seen Wizard of Oz about a million times, and the tiger's eye one because I am a tiger nut. The other ones had me |

| This puzzle was a real journey. I couldn't figure out Tiger's Eye because I've never heard of it. Number eight was semi correct - I got Opal but not Black Opal. But 6 letters was enough to put Ambrosia together! |

| Fun and very clever! Liked it alot! GMONEY, if you're going to correct punctuation in your comments, at least get it right... Plural and possessive would be "gods'" -- the apostrophe after the "s". But who cares? It was a great teaser! |

Aug 07, 2006
| Great teaser! I figured out the answer without getting the last couple of gems, so I got some satisfaction and learned something, too.
GMoney--Sorry, you are the one that is incorrect. Why the apostophe? There is no contraction nor possessive indicated.I would not comment on an error in a teaser, but since you brought it up first I guess it's all right to comment on yours. And I mean this in a friendly way.
Good to have you back, Imurray. I missed you. |

| Way too dfifficult for me, but I definitly enjoyed reading it! |
Badger
Aug 07, 2006
| JCann is correct. I tried to put in a jab (above) but I'm sure my dry sense of humor fell flat. I think we all agree, per the rules, to leave the grammar and puct. coments out, and give feedback on the teaser. For the record, though, no contraction, no possessive, no apostrophe. For what it's worth, GMONEY's comment is a year old! Again, AWESOME TEASER! |

| I missed 50% of them,so I didn't get the answer. I think females are more tuned in to the gemstones. |

| The Gemstones were easy eacept for the black opal and I looked it up. But I did not understand the instructions and tried to use the first letters of each word for the answer. but it was great brain exersize figuring out the stones. thanks |

| This teaser's directions were somewhat befuddling, but worth the effort, even if I missed two.

Aug 08, 2006
| Woohoo, I got it!! That was fun, not too hard (maybe because I have the female advantage, like locutus13ds mentioned above). I got all the gemstones (cheating once by looking up Lightning Ridge, and I wasn't totally sure about the sixth so I looked it up and confirmed my guess of Tiger Eye, without the all-important S... but the hint about food for the gods immediately gave away the answer to me; I didn't even have to figure out that it was the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. letter of each word (each "in its turn" -- good hint on that!)
Very well done. Cheers and thumbs up (well one thumb anyways, since I'm cheersing at the same time!)

Aug 07, 2009
| A great teaser. I knew most of the stones just reading through it. But I knew what the god's longed for from a semester of greek mythology in 6th grade English class. I like the way you didn't take the first letter of each word but the letter that corresponds with the number of the word. A very interesting concept. A+++++ |

Good one! |

Aug 07, 2012
| I got as far as "ambr" then could not remember tiger eye and thought the dark stone was sardonyx. I should have know it was ambrosia from the gods all wanting it and figuring out that much of it anyway. Oh well, I liked it. |

Aug 07, 2012
| Unfertunately, crocidolite and Tiger's Eye are not the same gemstone, crocidolite being a form of asbestos, and Tiger's Eye being a form of quartz. Play fair, puzzle-maker. |
