Brain Teasers
Set In Stone
My creator is a mystery,
One that's set in stone.
My origins, my history,
Still totally unknown.
Tests of time I've had to face,
My strength and my endurance
Cause of weakness; it's your race,
But I'm free of all life currents.
Was I a calendar, a tomb, a shrine?
We've all wondered it before.
We don't know... but I'm a wonder!
I can tell you that for sure.
What am I?
One that's set in stone.
My origins, my history,
Still totally unknown.
Tests of time I've had to face,
My strength and my endurance
Cause of weakness; it's your race,
But I'm free of all life currents.
Was I a calendar, a tomb, a shrine?
We've all wondered it before.
We don't know... but I'm a wonder!
I can tell you that for sure.
What am I?
Hint
"My creator is a mystery,One that's set in STONE."
"We don't know... but I'm a WONDER!
I can tell you that for sure."
Answer
Stonehenge. The first verse describes the mystery that is Stonehenge. Although there are theories, we're still not absolutely positive who built it, how it was built, or why.
The second verse refers to the body of Stonehenge and the damage humans have caused. Each of the vertically-set stones weigh roughly over 5 tonnes, but tourists and passers-by have damaged and vandalized some smaller boulders also part of Stonehenge. There may also have been even more stones that were part of the broken circle that have now gone. Of course, rocks are lifeless, which explains the "life currents" mention.
The final verse explains some of the different theories developed for the purpose of Stonehenge. Some have said it was used to mark dates with the help of the sun's alignment, it may have been a burial ground, or even a temple of worship.
The capitalized words in the hint were used quite literally: Stonehenge is made of STONE, and it is one of the WONDERS of the world.

Easy, but very nicely written!

that was very confusing!!
but it was really awesome!!
but it was really awesome!!
well written, and I enjoyed it. Great way to describe Stonehenge
It didn't seem all that straight forward to me.
I thought of the pyramids (although we know they were a tomb).
I thought of Easter Island (we have a decent idea who made the carvings).
I thought of Stonehenge (although the purpose is not definitely known, most believe that it is a type of calendar that could possibly predict astronomical events. I don't think I have ever heard any other purpose though).

A good one! Well thought out. Exellant!!! It had me totally stumped.
i thought it was easy..but thought out well..
very well written

AWESOME! i got it! go me. lol good one. sorry i got so excited but i rarely get teasers. keep them coming!
pyramids! Good one! Favs!
Not overly difficult, but well written. I especially liked the first 2 paragraphs!
Great riddle! I had to look at the hint to get it...but that's why it's there. Good one!!
I think Stonehenge was built by Abe Vigoda as an above ground swimming pool.
"NOW", THIS IS A GOOD ONE. THANKS BECAUSE I GOT IT. hOW WAS IT BROUGHT TO BE?????
Was halfway through reading it when i got it. EASY
Great riddle rose_rox!! Very well-written. I thought it was fairly easy... but I like it!!
I am a new member and you are my first comment...lucky lucky huh? I was stumped too...had to look at the hint
great teaser!!
great teaser!!
I agree it was an easy one but it was cleverly written. Thanks for a good one.
Huh!!! Well, I thought it was the Pyramids, or the Sphinx. Although we know the Pyramids are tombs, there are other qualities that might show they were used for other purposes as well, like the sun lining up with certain points and openings in the walls. Also, I've never heard the idea that Stonehenge was a tomb, but the other two reasons I've heard of. That's OK, though! I thought it was well-written, and fun, and maybe if I had even THOUGHT of Stonehenge I would have answered that; didn't occur to me at all!!!
Liked this one, good riddle, gave all the clues needed
Well I thought it was a little boring, but whatever. What is a stonehenge anyway??
easy peasy!
Very easy but interesting
The word wonder threw me - had narrowed down to Stonehenge and Pyramid -- knew paramyd one of 7 wonders but didn't think Stonhenge was - also knew that pyrimid was primarily a tomb but thot maybe it served other purposes too -- didn't think Stonehenge ever considered as tomb
At first I thought it was The Colossus of Rhodes because of the word Wonder (of the World). But after seeing calendar and time, I realized what it was. Good job. I liked it.
got it, fairly easy...but still a good teaser.
lol, i had to do a project on stonehenge so i got it...im so happy this is my first riddle that i actually got the answer right!
Very well written! Great job, and I would love to see more like this one from you!
I loved this one. It was easy but very well written. Awesome!!!
I guessed it right, but was unsure. Seemed pretty vague the first few times I read it, but I guess thats what a riddle should be!
I'll just echo everyone else and say again: very well written. Excellent meter and rhyme. Clever clever!
Very easy.
Great Teaser! I got it right away but I think its because you worded it so well. I loved it! Its a favorite!
I really liked the poetry in this riddle. Very nicely written and made me think of a very interesting and enigmatic location on this great planet we've inherited. Great job Rose!
I just couldn't let this go: to the above poster who said they thought this teaser was boring, then they asked what a stonehenge is- LOL!
Good one! I didn't get it, but then I've been having a brain lapse today. No sleep. Stonehenge is cool. Has anyone here ever actually visited it?
Very good. The word wonder had me thinking of the Seven Wonders, but then Calendar gave it away completely.
It's a magnificent sight, even just from the road passing by.
It's a magnificent sight, even just from the road passing by.
A for effort but still way too easy.
ummm, is stonehenge those rock tower thingies????? b/c if not, i don't know what it is. cool one anyways
Very easy! But thanx--every now and then people like me who are bad at riddles have to get one right! lol 2 thumbs up
I got it, BUT...
Stonehenge is not one of the SEVEN wonders of the world. The Pyramids of Giza are the only remaining wonder(s).
Otherwise, it was pretty good, and VERY easy.

nice teaser and i got it!!
Very easy, but also very nice. I liked it.

Good riddle - but wrong answer. Correct answer is the pyramids at Giza.
This was cool but I got it!! (a little easy though. )
Hey Gobananas. When you approach Stonehenge it comes at you out of nowhere amid the open fields of England. It is massive yet fragile. Contractors with modern machinery would be hard pressed to balance such awesome stones with so much delicacy. When I went you were allowed to wander amongst the stones but not touch them. I had to lightly graze them with my hand anyway.
zap- it is Stonehenge, but they just have to take out the "wonder" part.
Although Stonehenge is not 1 of the 7 wonders of the Ancient world...it is 1 of the 7 wonders of the midevil mind. People should do their research before knocking your riddle. Great job! A+ for you!
Very clever!
i actually thought it was a wonder...like in age of empires
aew5104- then explain why the answer says, and I quote: "it is one of the WONDERS of the world." Nothing about whatever medieval stuff you were talking about. I think the person WRITING the teaser should do their research!!!!
Wow, some people get really fretful over a simple teaser. From a completely technical point of view, I did not state Stonehenge as one of seven wonders in the ANCIENT WORLD. Aside from that, is there any sort of definitive list of wonders? I conclude that it's a 'forgotten wonder' and one that deserves some honourable mention.
However---many thanks for the compliments, hope you enjoyed it!

Nice nice. Pretty easy. The stone part was what gave me the hint.
I got it really fast, but then again, I'm into the whole "unsolved mysteries" thing, so...
By the way, check out Eddie Izzard's DVD "Dress to Kill." He does a CLASSIC bit about Stonehenge. "CAKE OR DEATH?!?"

Great Teaser! Very easy but also well written and fun!!!
Easy, but fantastic.
This is a fabulous teaser, rose rox! Stone Henge is so fascinating. Going into my faves.
loved it!
BRANDON YOU ARE GAY?
Excellent teaser! And well written!
It reminds me of when we first went to London on a "guided" tour. With a full itinerary, we had one free afternoon, and inquired at the hotel desk about getting to Stonehenge. The girl behind the desk chirped, "Stewn'enge! Hwot's that?" We went back to the Tower. On a later visit, we had a car, and the lady at the B&B told us how to get there. The fences weren't up then, and we could walk among the stones. I put my hand against one, and (maybe this was my imagination) I felt a tingling like a power surge. It was a memorable experience!

Good teaser. It was easy, but trying to get through the comments was not. Brandon didn't seem too happy with that rather long confession (all sad faces).
Great teaser! Awesome way to describe Stonehenge. But I think you gave it away a little. Great job!
Read this in National Geographic before. But a good one.
brandon what does that have to do with the teaser? well written, easy teaser
totally missed it
Nicely written, well thought out teaser. I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.
wow! I actually got it right!
great teaser
great teaser
Hah!
I thought Stonehenge even before I finished reading the first paragraph. Well done.
Knew it from the start, but enjoyed all of it. Don't pay any attention to the nay-sayers!!
Very good and important in history
Loved it
I got the answer from the first paragraph, but it was cool to see the answer supported and confirmed by the lines that followed.
I visited there 35 years ago, a marvel in the middle of nowhere! It really made us WONDER what it was all about--one of the highlights of my only trip to London; thanks for the memory!

I guessed it early on; was a little distracted by "wonder" as it is not considered one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, and it is fairly well accepted by the scientific world that it has to do with calendars and astronomy. Nowhere have I seen it ever suggested that it was a tomb, but then who am I?
BobbyL, have you ever read Mary Stewart's Merlin books? In those books, it is suggested that Merlin erected the stones for King Ambrosius.
MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS IT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE MOON--I NEVER DID GET THIS ONE---BUT IT WAS A GOOD TEASER..
Sorry, I meant as a TOMB for King Ambrosius. Of cours, those books are completely fictionalized, but they're interesting stories.
I got it by the second line. Stonehenge is my desktop
However I was interested, although saddened, to learn of the human involvement in it's defacement. Wonderful topic and teaser.

had no idea.

got it right.
hooray.
I thought The Sphynx, and even after seeing the answer, still think it just as well could have been, or the Easter Island Statues, or any of the other stone monuments. Nice teaser though.
It took the hint to give me the path to the the answer. Very good teaser.
i got a boner
I said the Great Pyramids! Some say it was a calendar too! I love the poetry
Good topic, easy teaser.
I am surprised at the number of people who said they were stumped by it. It seemed pretty easy and straightforward to me.
simple, yet fun
This is pretty easy- well-written though. However it needs a clue that applies only to Stonehenge. It remains vague as the right answer could be the pyramids, or Machu Picchu, or Mayan pyramids. There isn't one clue here that eliminates those guesses. Maybe you need to riddle in a location like Europe--that would narrow it down more.
FYI--According to Arthurian legend, Merlin used magic to bring the stones from Ireland.

Took me a few minutes to decide between pyramids, sphinx and Stonehenge. By the end of the riddle I was sure it had to be Stonehenge. Nicely written riddle Rose.
nice n easy thanks!
Fun and entertaining teaser. I got it with the hint. I probably made it harder than it should have been and should have gotten it without the hint. The hint made me feel kind of dumb that I did not catch on after reading the teaser.
