wow! that's pretty cool.
I got that it was a palidrome (sp???) almost immidiately, but not that it was the longest in any language! Great teaser!
'a man, a plan, a canal, panama' is longer.
but that wasn't a word
he never said that it had to be a word. there is this one palindrome that is way longer... i think it is like 913 words or something...
and if you can show me, I will admit defeat
ah yes, and for you, peppermintwist, it was spelled correctly at Palindrome
Are you sure that Saippuakivikauppias is a real word, I looked it up on a website that specialises in palindromes from around the world and there is no mention of it in the Finnish section. In fact I think the longest Finnish Palindrome was only 11 letters long. check it out for yourself.

I stand corrected, you were right, but there is a longer palindrome from Finland, meaning "Soap cup dealer". You can find the word here:- http://www.uebersetzung.at/twister/fi.htm#T46
i once read a story that was about 500 words long and a palendrome but i lost the link.
i thought it was easy... anywho I did a search on Google for it.. like 50 things came up... yeah its a word... and he said ONE of the longest... so if it goes from 913 (which is just flat out retarded) to 19... its still ONE of the longest
That wasn't very hard if you knew about palindromes...
i mean words
ok, i think it's like 15,000 words: here goes!~~~

okay, i'm really tired of typing.
the site that you can go to to get the entire thing is http://www.norvig.com/palindrome.html
seeing as that took up alot of time and space, I guess it is time for me to admit defeat...congrats...(wimper wimper) I may just cry.
As a Finn, I can say that saippuakivikauppias can be real Finnish. Usually only "saippuakauppias" is used, though, so that stone part really doesn't mean anything. I mean, what are soap stones? XD
A soap stone is something that was used in the old days to rub the clothes with, sometimes just a plain stone, sometimes a chunk of metal mixture.
I'm a Finn, too, and must comment that a palindrome that long isn't even long in Finnish. It wouldn't be impossible to form a longer one, as the Finnish language typically just bangs words together. Were I more skilled with palindromes, I'd make one.

I got that it was a palindrome right away.. but WOW! I was really impressed ... that's one hell of a long one!
What I dont understand is why people make stupid palindromes out of words, though. Anyone, if they had a few weeks, could do it. But they're not coherent sentences, so who really cares?

what about solutomaattimittaamotulos, a finnish word meaning "the result from a measurement laboratory for tomatoes." Not sure if its true but i got it from http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=270
Yes, it's been five years since the last comment! Easy and fun. Thank you!
Fun, and not too easy. Love the comments.
Why can some people not just enjoy a teaser instead of going through great lengths to prove the submitter wrong?
I thought it was great and though he did not specify that it had to be a word, I took that as what he meant from the beginning. The "proof" was just a bunch of random words stuck together, at least come up with an actual sentence.

To me this teaser was a whole lot of nothing about nothing. It will go down as my least liked.
Clever and fun! Thanks! I loved the comments, too!!
I got the palindrome bit, but not the long bit.
I agree with Cutebug, the whole thing was a waste of time. More of a trivia question than a brain teaser.
I like palindromes and I got it right away. Good teaser!
Saippuakivikauppias is a real Finnish word.
And I think it is a safe assumption that the author was implying that he/she meant longest single word palindrome.
The author asked in the teaser "what is special about this WORD"
I never took it to mean that multiword phrases were involved.

As someone said 10 years ago, I got right away that it was a palindrome but I stopped there--didn't know its length was significant to the solution of the teaser. I'm giving myself SOME credit, anyway! Is that OK?
I am with Cutebug! Why do we really care about all this??? It is a "Ho HUm" teaser.
There is a palindrome that's infinitely long: "A six is a six is a six is a six is a six is a...." You can keep it up as long as you like, but you can never properly end it, because then it won't be a palindrome anymore.
Interesting bit of palindrome trivia, which I like. Not much of a teaser.
I'm with cutebug?
And I'm with markw
