Honourable Mention:
11/12 challenges - cinnamon30, brainster, Daffidd, Mysterious, RGW4¹, strategery, Wolverine115¹
19/12 challenges - cdrock, Harmony_Girl, ppjones
16/12 challenges - Kethry, Smeraldina
¹Officially, RGW4 and Wolverine115 solved 11 challenges on their own, but they did eventually find Carmen. Once Team Asia found me and the jig was up, I helped nudge them onto the right track.
Great game, everyone! I hope you enjoyed the challenges, and the team format. I want to thank everyone for their time and effort, even after being fired!
I was not, as suggested, answering the Psych questions. As he explained it to me, RGW4 picked Man! I Feel Like a Woman! to sing because it was the only song he was sufficiently familiar with. That is one karaoke performance I would love to see.
So, poor Carmen Sandiego must find a new hiding place. You will be most welcome to help track her down again; a new twist awaits in Where in the World? 4 - coming late summer to a WTB game near you!
Meanwhile, there is the small matter of an unsolved hangman challenge. Shall we retire to the Map Room?
(Invitations to the Map Room have been extended to remaining players.)
Challenge Answers:
Challenge A ... Challenge B ... Challenge C ... Challenge D ... Challenge E ... Challenge F
Challenge G ... Challenge H ... Challenge I ... Challenge J .... Challenge K ... Challenge L
................................................. Carmen's location
The first stop is the WakÅ Department Store , where teams could stock up on supplies for their hunt for Carmen.
Challenge A:
This is a simple one to whet your whistles - a compass rose.
Challenge B:
Hint 1: What have you done, Jack? Sold some art. Where? Asia. Nice!
Hint 2: Want some coffee? That's a capital idea!
This one is a little trickier, and requires 2 steps. First, decipher the images as:
Done Jack Art Asia
Then, read the rebus as Jack Art A in Done sia or Jakarta, Indonesia. (Jakarta alone works too.)
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, and is located on the island of Java, which is well-known for its coffee.
Challenge C:
That's Cat Deely, from So You Think You Can Dance? on the left. The symbol for Mars also represents male/man and then there's a can of (Mountain) Dew.
So, now we head to Cat-man-dew or Kathmandu.
The real trick is recognizing that there is more to this former Amazing Braingle Race page than the Dead End information. Scroll down to find:
Challenge D:
A city you seek, a place to treasure
So combine these things in equal measure:
An original transgression
A San Francisco store and
A product of mine.
An original transgression is a sin; there are plenty of stores in San Francisco, but the Gap originated there; and ore is the generic term for a product taken from a mine. Sin, Gap and Ore are all 3-letter words, so the measure is equal.
We head this time to Singapore City, or just Singapore if you prefer.
Challenge E:
The merlion is the symbol of Singapore. Take away the O and you have Merlin.
Challenge F:
Consider the groups of words below. All the words share a common theme. Beyond that, all the words in Group 1 meet a certain criterion, and all the words in Group 2 meet another criterion. Four of the words in Group 3 belong in one group, while the fifth word belongs in the other group. Determine which of the Group 3 words is the odd one out, and why, and you will have the answer to this challenge.
Group 1 ............ Group 2 ............. Group 3
Mystery ............ Suite .................. Bleeding
Raising .-........... Transfer ............. Rolling
Blue .......-.......... Burning ............. Winning
Feeling ....-......... Breaks ............... Trail
Beautiful ...-........ Minute ............... Happy
Hint 1: This could take a while. I'll make some popcorn!
Hint 2: What is your state of mind, Oscar?
Hint 3: Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Hint 4: Did you know there is a town of Merlin?
Twain's Connecticut Yankee isn't just a title, it's a clue. All of these words, when paired with state names, become movie titles. In Group 1, the word comes before the state name; in Group 2 the state names come before the word. Four of the words in Group 3 belong in Group 1, with the odd one out belonging in Group 2:
Group 1 ........................ Group 2 ........................... Group 3
Mystery, Alaska ............ California Suite .................. Bleeding Iowa
Raising Arizona .-........... Idaho Transfer .................. Rolling Kansas
Blue Hawaii.......-.......-... Mississippi Burning ............ Winning New Hampshire
Feeling Minnesota ......... (The) Missouri Breaks ........ (The) Oregon Trail
Beautiful Ohio ...-.......-... New York Minute .............. Happy, Texas
None of these movies actually won an Oscar, but Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? did. Merlin is also a town in Oregon, of course.
Challenge G:
Tequila Sunrise
John Delmont hadn't seen his former classmates from Copernicus High School since graduation, so he was surprised to run into 5 of them while on vacation in Veracruz. Between shots of tequila, the men reminisced about their school days under the warm night sky, and shared details of their current lives. By the next morning, John had forgotten most of what he had learned. From the following information, can you piece together each classmate's last name with his occupation, his city of residence and the organization to which he belongs?
Last names: Cooper, Crater, Miller, Sutter, Weaver
Occupations: Carpenter, Mason, Painter, Sculptor, Writer
Cities of Residence: Biloxi, Dallas, Houston, Mobile, Phoenix
Organizations: Braingle, Kiwanis, Lions, Mensa, Rotary
1. Mr Weaver (who isn't the sculptor) isn't a member of Mensa and doesn't live in Texas.
2. The writer (who isn't from Phoenix) isn't a member of Braingle or Rotary.
3. The three members of the service organizations are Mr Sutter, the carpenter and the man from Dallas.
4. The painter (who isn't the Lions Club member) and the man from Biloxi played in the school band together.
5. The sculptor (who isn't Mr Miller) and the man from Dallas were in Mrs Webster's English class.
6. Mr Sutter (who isn't the sculptor) was in the same homeroom as the man from Houston.
7. Neither the man from Mobile nor the man from Phoenix (who isn't Mr Cooper) has an account on Braingle.
8. The man from Houston isn't a member of Mensa or Braingle.
9. Mr Miller (who isn't a Rotarian), the carpenter and the writer were three of the starting players of the varsity basketball team.
The solution to this logic teaser is 5 sets of 4 words: [last name], [occupation], [city],[organization]
One of these sets will correspond to a wiki page with the next part of this challenge.
There are 625 possible permutations, so, hopefully, if you can't solve the teaser completely, you can at least narrow down the possibilities.
Answer:
From clue 3, the Kiwanian, the Lion and the Rotarian are, in some order, Mr Sutter, the carpenter and the man from Dallas. The man from Houston must be one of these people (clue 8 ), but isn't from Dallas, and isn't Mr Sutter (clue 6), and so must be the carpenter. The man with the account on Braingle isn't from Mobile or Phoenix (clue 7) and so must be from Biloxi. Mr Weaver doesn't live in either Houston or Dallas, and he isn't in Mensa (clue 1), so he must be a Braingler. Weaver isn't the painter (clue 4) or the writer (clue 2), so he must be the mason. The sculptor isn't Sutter (clue 6) or the man from Dallas (clue 5), so he isn't in a service organization, but he isn't Weaver (clue 1), so he must be in Mensa. Mr Miller isn't the carpenter, the writer (clue 9) or the sculptor (clue 5), so he is the painter and must be from Dallas, and he isn't a Rotarian (clue 9) or a Lions Club member (clue 4), so he is with Kiwanis. Since Sutter must be the writer, the sculptor must be from Phoenix (clue 2), and Sutter must be from Mobile. Cooper cannot be the sculptor (clue 7), so he is the carpenter, leaving Crater as the sculptor. The writer isn't with Rotary (clue 2), so he is in the Lions Club, and the carpenter is the Rotarian.
Sutter = writer = Mobile = Lions Club
Cooper = carpenter = Houston = Rotary
Miller = painter = Dallas = Kiwanis
Weaver = mason = Biloxi = Braingle
Crater = sculptor = Phoenix = Mensa
Fun fact: Tequila Sunrise starred Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, who also starred in the original Stargate movie.
Like Southern Cross, it is also a song title, which leads us to the next challenge.
Challenge H:
tre
Hint 1: You folks need a hint? Too bad; without one you could brag a little when you solved it.
Hint 2: Climb every mountain! Fjord every stream!
Hint 3: Would you like the name of another song from the same album? Psych!
Hint 4: If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a song?
Well, this could be a tree stump, if not for the instruction that tells you it's a song. Actually, this is another foreign language rebus, although it make take a while, and possibly the spelling of fjord in the hint, to run through the possible languages to come up with Norwegian.
Norwegian Wood is a folk song, and is also and example of raga rock, which is rock influenced by South Asian music. The song is from the album Rubber Soul, which also included the song In My Life - one of the karaoke choices in the psych question from the 3rd round.
Challenge I:
2525, 3535, 4545, 5555, 6565, ????, ...
The next number is not the last one, but it does correspond to a wiki page. It has 4 digits, so I hope it doesn't take you years to find it!
The numbers are years mentioned in the song In the Year 2525. The pattern changes after 6565; the next year is 7510.
Challenge J:
Xnt bzm rdzqbg ghfg, xnt bzm rdzqbg knv,
Nq enkknv dzbg onhms ne sgd bnlozrr qnrd,
Ats mn lzssdq vgdqd hm sgd vnqkc xnt fn,
H'l zkvzxr gdqd qhfgs tmcdq xntq mnrd.
Hint 1: If you've finished the decryption, let's watch Dr Phil. He is doing a show on dealing with temper tantrums.
Hint 2: If you are feeling pressed for time, look through the eyes of the dragon.
Hint 3: If you put your finger on it, you can feel your lip thrum.
Hint 4: Feeling depressed? Keep a stiff upper lip!
Hint 5: Groovy, baby!
This riddle was encoded using a Caesar cipher, with a shift of 25. When decrypted, it reads:
You can search high, you can search low,
Or follow each point of the compass rose,
But no matter where in the world you go,
I'm always here right under your nose.
That little indentation right under your nose is called a philtrum.
Stephen King's publishing house, Philtrum Press, produced copies of his fantasy novel The Eyes of the Dragon, as well as other limited editions.
Lip thrum is an anagram of philtrum; both depressed (depression) and groovy were meant to describe the philtrum.
Challenge K:
Friends, Romans, Countrymen
mule sale
acinus
repasts
The 3 words/phrases above are anagrams of lesser known words with a common theme - if you first remove one of the letters (not necessarily the same one) from each one. The 3 letters that are removed will spell a word that relates to the theme.
Once you determine the words, use the more commonly known terms as your answer.
Answer:
Remove the E from mule sale, and you have an anagram of malleus.
Remove the A from acinus, and you have an anagram of incus.
Remove the R from repasts, and you have an anagram of stapes.
The malleus, incus and stapes are the bones of the middle ear, more commonly called the hammer, anvil and stirrup.
The line "Friends, Romans, countrymen..." is from Mark Antony's speech in Julius Caesar. The line continues with: "...lend me your ears."
Challenge L:
Following Directions
knee
sir
wash
send
corn
trap
sun
girly
This is a two part challenge. First, you will be adding a letter (not necessarily the same one) to each of the above words such that new words are formed.
The 8 added letters, in the order used, will spell a word that corresponds to a wiki page with the second part of the challenge: directions on how to determine the name of the last piece of the picture.
Hint: Remember, it's a Two Part Challenge!
Hint 2: What song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1985?
Hint 3: Hey, Rose! Still working on that crossword? Hai! Can you help? What is an 8-letter word for direction?
Hint 4: Did you keep your sales receipt for that compass? Maybe you could exchange it for an oil lamp, if you wish.
Answer:
There are few ways to create new words by adding a letter to most of the given words. For example, you can make kneed, kneel or knees from knee; and sirs, sire, or stir from sir. The words wash and girly present a problem with this straightforward approach, and should suggest that something else is required.
The phrase "two part challenge" is also the name of one of my teasers. In Two Part Challenge, the letters of the alphabet are added in turn to the beginning of other words to form new words. The same must be done here - but with a twist revealed in the second hint. Lionel Richie's Say You, Say Me is an indication to say the letter and then say the word:
g + knee = genie
u + sir = user
i + wash = eyewash
d + send = descend
a + corn = acorn
n + trap = entrap
c + sun = season
e + girly = eagerly
So, the 8-letter word for direction is guidance, which is exactly what you were looking for, right?
In the third hint Rose says, "Hai!" - the Japanese word for yes. Tokyo Rose, perhaps? This is a reminder that you picked up you compass and began your travels in Tokyo, not Jakarta.
The reference to the sales receipt was meant as a second reminder to start at the WakÅ Department Store . The oil lamp is a reference to Aladdin and the genie who granted him 3 wishes.
The compass headings as you travelled from Tokyo to Jakarta, then to Kathmandu, and finally to Singapore are SSW (4U), NNW (2P) and SSE (8E). So the name of the last piece of the picture is Square3L4U2P8E.
Carmen's Location
Now you have all the pieces of the picture.
Did you recognize Table Mountain? I mentioned this landmark when describing the southern constellation Mensa.
Table Mountain forms the backdrop for Cape Town, South Africa. Some of you may remember racing through there before.
And on the beautiful Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town is the Quay Four Restaurant. Seafood, anyone?
i was the third

Great game once again, Giz!

I enjoyed pulling my hair out. It was the one thing about this game that I was hoping would not happen, that I would be the boss. My first time as boss and basically I have nothing to do but move like the wind. That put a different type of pressure on me than I really felt I needed with the challenges and all.
There were several PM's exchanged with the song psych question. I really did answer that honestly. I had never heard of the other songs on the list (some of you may have seen my lack of knowledge of Queen in another game - though once I looked up their songs I at least knew them). I listened to all 4 songs on You tube when I got the question and shook my head...I only knew one and if I was going to have to embarrass myself in front of people singing... it would be at least a song I could laugh with the crowd with.
Other than favourite, I did not try to really do anything with my answers, other than not capatilizing. I wasn't trying to "hide" my answers, as I felt this was a game that the boss was not really important until the end...and Gizzer still told you who to fire, so it really was only a guess game on your side until the final moment if you finished first.
We were happy to find that the final team did not solve it until the last day. It made the problems we were having with L challenge seem almost warranted. That one was one heck of a puzzle, I can't tell you how crazy I know I was going and how much time I really did spend on it. I even asked Gizzer if she had misspelled girly.
Anyway, good race - now for some much needed rest!

Good job guys. It was fun. I look forward to another edition of WITW.
Challenge H was tough for me, even with 4 hints I still didn't get it. It took some prodding to point me in the right direction. Giz its great you give hints, but I don't think I'll look at them again as it confuses me even more. You are very cryptic with those hints. Evil I say, Evil I say.
Unfortunately, Dina was unable to get on-line with her busy work schedule and I was pretty much on my own. We'll see how the next one fairs out.
Great job of putting it together Giz.
I have been working on the Hangman, but I haven't solved them all, nor have I sent you what I have. I'll send you what I have so far.

Wow, that was a great game. I wish we could have won, but we came close enough. I can't wait for WITW 4, and I'm looking forward to the surprising twist!
Dear God, That which I am about to do is really stupid. I hope I come out of this alive. Thanks God. Peace Out. (Stage Crew Prayer)

Tan, I know, but when I get tunnel vision I need a new set of eyes to pull me out. Unfortunately, Dina couldn't help, but I did keep trying and I got prodded in the right direction. I found the next 3 no problem, which is why I had solved 11/12. I didn't get the last challenge finished, but I hadn't spent much time on it. Work has been very busy and I haven't had much time in the evenings. RL takes over sometimes.

That was great fun and compliments to the Asia team that managed to win with this old anchor dragging along! We really used teamwork to prevail and plenty of luck too. We knew we had other teams on our heels and there was some great play from the sidelines! Great game all!
Thanks especially to Gizzer for all her hard work to show us a good time.
Now, it is time to build a fire and rest. Isn't it good? Norwegian wood.
Join the Zona Force--Dedicated to fun and friendly Braingling!

Well done Gizzer, Bossman, and my teammates...
I look forward to the next round of madness.
Edit... so Giz... you said Late Summer... so I guess you're going to focus on the remodel?
Good Luck with that... more maddening than your genius teasers I'm sure...
So... we have until.... July?... August...? to play other games without fear of missing yours????

The remodel is almost done now, actually. The new floor was put in today (looks great!), and I spent a couple of hours staining the new trim. I have the wallpaper border to put up, and some touch ups on the paint where the installers and then I can put the kitchen back together.
I do need to spend some time on other things, so I will take my time making the next game. I have the location already, and a few ideas.
I'm thinking late August - so you'll have plenty of time to play other games. I would like to play some games myself!
I will give at least a couple weeks notice - in my wiki homepage, and in the Map Room.

you know, I was very hesitant to play this game beings I did not do well in the first one...and actually did worse in the second one where I played on the sidelines... what I figured out was the key to playing this game was to just give it 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, forget food (not booze though), sleep, or any sanity...and you know, you can do quite well at it.
I probably will sign up earlier on WITW 4... by then, my brain cells should be refreshed.
With no reflection on Wolverine, whom I felt was busy with finals and I totally understood it... I think it would be better if the rat and boss were not on the same team by themselves. I also realize a lot has to do with who the boss actually is, because we all know how well we did in these puzzles (regardless of team members). I think the pre-game challenge should set the teams totally. I had to come up to the plate and it created its own problems with my personal situation right now...but I felt a need to give it my all for the effort Gizzer did to put this together.

YEah, I really didn't realize how hard these weeks would be for me and my schedule. I've had "pop" finals in my history and english classes, and the scary thing is, it's not even finals week yet, so I'm kind of scared. There's 5 parts to my English final, and we've taken two, including a 200 point vocab test, where no one has EVER gotten an A, and the average is about a 55%. Anyway, I'm sort of on the fence about how to arrange the teams, it does sort of provide motivation for the boss and rat to work hard, knowing that they both are working together, because if they're on separate teams, then how do you know if the boss came in first, or another teammate did? How would you determine the winner?
Dear God, That which I am about to do is really stupid. I hope I come out of this alive. Thanks God. Peace Out. (Stage Crew Prayer)

I agree with doing the teams and using the hangman style format to determine those teams. When Giz did the ABR's we always had alliances on the side to help each other, but like RGW said it takes over your life.
With this new format you can complete the game in a few days, provided you have the time to play it and I love Giz's challenges. It really makes you think. I look forward to the next edition of WITW and am excited to see the new twist(s).

you know, I was very hesitant to play this game beings I did not do well in the first one...and actually did worse in the second one where I played on the sidelines... what I figured out was the key to playing this game was to just give it 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, forget food (not booze though), sleep, or any sanity...and you know, you can do quite well at it.

LOL, there was zero chance I was going to solve the "add a letter" challenge - so glad I was fired and gave my brain a break
Great game Giz!
Being in the game and having a teammate did make me concentrate harder than I had in the sidelines last time. Glad I could solve some of the riddles, but you sure are tough!

Strategery... the add a letter challenge was so mentally challenging to me that my wife even got involved. I PM'd Gizzer with my frustration because I had typed out over 12 pages of notes trying to decipher that dang puzzle.
She said it... after we were basically eliminated, she gave several clues. I even told her after the challenge was solved that the best clue would have been to start the clue with something like "it sounds like..." as I really did not get it until she was more specific about "Genie". You do feel fairly dumb when you can put two and two together!
I smile now as I say this... how many 3 people teams were in this game? 3 heads are always better than 2! Not wanting to sound bitter in any way... I do understand why the boss and rat were on a separate team.
I thought about this today and realize that this is probably the only problem with a 15 person game... when you do not put 5 teams of 3 people each in play...one or more team will have a real advantage. When one person's mind goes south, someone may be able to take over. And for the record... no problem with the winning team - I think it was one heck of a challenge to get through! Next time though!....

ya i do think that the three ppl teams is better but also, i my case, i felt that they are not helping at all
and when that happen, i was like jumping up and down with anger
coz they are not help us at all as they only help with solving the first one(ya, the compass_rose) and it was no use to me at all
so i think a 3 player team is not always good
what is sense??and if i am not making sense, then why i say it?? I SAY IT COZ IT MAKE SENSE TO ME BUT WHY IT DON'T MAKE SENSE TO YOU????????? sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, me and daffidd only had each other. You weren't the only one

I think there was only one team that had 3 players...and that was the team that won! Hmmmm, fact or fiction? Again, I am not bitter about it, one team had to have 3. Menz played with me in the first game and I knew he was one to reckon with...I was always just behind him in the thinking process. As I saw the names dwindling down, I was trying to figure out the teams. When Daffidd and Strategery were eliminated, I thought to myself... if Menz, Bo and PPjones were all on one team - it was definately over. This is no reflection on the others playing, but having played several games with these individuals I knew they really were capable of solving some if not all the challenges. I only wish we were just a bit faster on the last... day late and a dollar short!

Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. I didn't expect May to be so...horrible...in terms of work demands and pressure.
