Chapter 1
The swaying. The creaking sounds of the hull. And worst of all, the smell. Percival couldn't decide which smell was worse, the pungent salty fragrance of the sea that occasionally splashed through the small window above his hammock, or the rancid odor of unbathed sailors that filled the ship. How he missed solid ground and the bustle of the city back home. Well, not home anymore. After what seemed an eternity of tossing and turning, he finally began to fall asleep, if only out of exhaustion.
When he woke up, all was dark. As he struggled to climb out of all the debris that now covered him, all he heard was a ringing sound. The few that were still alive could be seen to be screaming in terror, but Percival couldn't hear them. All he could do was run. But where? A blast of sea foam mixed with blood quickly showed him where not to go. Percival lost his footing, mercifully missing the remains of the sailor who surrendered his hammock to the young boy. As he crawled desperately towards safety, his hearing began to return. And he heard his father calling for him. At last he turned a corner, and his father's arms grabbed him, and began to raise him to his feet. A look of relief was on his father's face.
His father never saw the debris of that next explosion, but both of them heard the impact of the cannonball. Percival fell flat on his back as his father instinctively covered his wounded eyes in pain. Percival began to shout his father's name, only to find himself falling once more. This time, into the sea. All went black.

Percival awoke to a sharp pain on his cheek. Everything was a blur for a few moments, then a grizzled face came into focus. "Finally, yer awake!"
Percival looked up at his friend, then glanced around at the other hammocks. No one else was awake. "I'm sorry, Horace."
"You should be! If Cap'n Cortez finds out about anyone awake after curfew, it's the crows nest for the lot o' us!"
Horace's expression changed to worry as he helped Percival to his feet. "Nightmares again?"
Percival nodded. "It was three years ago, today."
"I hope yer father made it, Percy."
"Thanks."
"Well, back to sleep. Long day tomorrow, and the storms are comin.'"
Percy climbed back into his hammock, and breathed in the smells of the ship deeply. The gentle sway of the ship felt comforting as he quickly fell asleep.

"Yer awake, finally."
Percival awoke in a simple bed, struggling to adjust to the light of the sun blasting through a window. A simply dressed man sat in a chair nearby, eating out of a coconut. He smiled as Percival glanced his way.
"Name's Joe. You were lucky my boy Milo found ye, beached like a wee little whale."
"Where... am I?" Percival stuttered slightly.
"Nowhere, really. Just a little scrap of land in th' ocean I call home. Used to sail these seas, but I found this life to be much happier. What's yer name, boy?"
"My name's Percival."
Joe chuckled. "That's a mouthful. Got any other names?"
"Jones. Percival Jones."
Joe smiled. "That's more like it. Jones be a proper name for the sea." Joe looked the boy over. "You don't seem the seafarin' type, Percival Jones."
"I used to live in London."
"Ah! Goin' to the colonies down south, then?"
Percival nodded slowly. "After we lost mum, father couldn't stay."
"I'm sorry." Joe mumbled. "But cheer up! Yer safe now, and I'm sure yer father will make it, too."
"I don't think so," Percival mumbled. "It looked like he hurt his eyes in the attack."
"So, ye was attacked." Joe rubbed his chin. "Bad luck. Pirates have been active in these seas." Joe stood up, and motioned towards a door. "Best get ya somethin' to eat. Lotsa coconuts, and I'll get my boys to heat up some tea for ya."
Percival followed Joe outside. At once, he was startled by all the people he saw. There were two ships docked at the nearby shore, and scores of people bustling around. Percival paled as he saw the skull and crossbones waving from the nearest ship. A hand clamped tightly around Percival's mouth before he could shout.
"Fergot to tell ye about that," Joe mumbled softly. "I get all kinds of visitors here, and treat them all the same. Pirate or not, everyone is my guest. It's a good way not to die."
Percival gulped as Joe withdrew his hand. "Are you a pirate, Joe?"
Joe chuckled. "Doesn't matter. You wanna be?"
Percival shook his head.
"Fine with me," Joe mumbled. "I know a few good captains who stop by this way who could be looking for new crewmates. Not pirates, don't worry."
"I can't stay?"
"Oh, you could." Joe smiled. "But you'll never find yer father here. Cheer up. Salvador Cortez is an old friend of mine, and he'll be putting to port here in a few weeks. I'll put in a good word. And that's plenty of time to get ye seaworthy. Now, enough talk. Let's get some grub."
- - - - -
The crack of a whip startled Percy out of his daydream. Grudgingly, he grabbed his mop, and hurried back to work. Horace jumped back to his feet as the taskmaster put his whip away, and resumed his duties. In a few minutes, he had made his way to Percy.
"That's the last time today I cover for ye. Stay focused." Horace grumbled.
"I can't take any more of this, Horace."
Horace grinned. "Yer doin' well for a city boy on the sea, take heart in that. But don't worry. I've been plannin' somethin,' and I got several others ready. Just be in the cargo hold after sundown. You'll see."
- - - - -
"What is it now, Diego?"
"Apologies, Carlos..." Diego stammered.
"That's 'Captain' to you!" Carlos interrupted. "Spit it out!"
"The crew... They've been meeting in the cargo hold after curfew... I think they're going to... to..."
"Mutiny, perhaps?" Carlos grinned. "I know. I have my source."
"But... if you knew..."
"Then why do I allow them to meet?" Carlos shot back. Diego nodded.
"Since our beloved Salvador has been so tragically bedridden, I've been running this ship in his name, Diego. And I've come to realize that we have too many crew members. All those sea rats Salvador adopted, they're just dead weight."
"So... you want them to mutiny?"
"Yes." Carlos smiled. "The men wouldn't stand for me just getting rid of those useless curs. But if I do it in self defense, they'll join me as one. And when it's over, I can stop giving orders in poor Salvador's name."
"I see..." Diego sighed. "But the Captain, he cares about those boys. That's why he brought them on."
"I'm the Captain now, remember that!" Carlos shouted. "But, not to worry. Salvador won't be a problem. He'll be the first target of those boys he cares so much about. And in his current state, he won't stand a chance. And that's when a new Captain will save the ship from those rebellious rats."
Diego gulped. "Aye, Captain."

Howdy Stew and Guamgirl! Time sure flies.. I didn't completely abandon ship but mostly just drifting along with the tide getting older and wish I could say wiser! I have followed (spied on?) a few of the Braingle friends on Facebook and have celebrated some of their accomplishments like college graduation and marriage! Time seems to speed up (not me slowing down) when you reach retirement. I was back for a reunion wolf game for Hadleigh and figured a Pirate boss game should be quite entertaining! Glad the site and games are still going! Good to see you all!

Arrr matey's... I be thinking I can say something before another problem exists. I signed up a yesterday and before I could say anything, my computer dumped me off the internet. I have had no problem with the computer on items not connected to the internet. I deleted the adobe flash I upgraded and thought that might have been it; but I suspect it was something attached to the upgrade that I missed. Seems better since I reset all the auxiliary systems attached to the computer outside the computer (the Wi-Fi, internet connection boxes, etc...). I doubt many a pirate spent time at sea resetting their computers before a big battle...not! So bare with me whilst I get this thing resolved. I have even toyed with getting a new computer... as I said in the forum general info thread... Windows 10 is not an easy system to clean up... at least for this guy!

As much as I would want to push for a quick sail, I have some real issues with this meltdown issue of the Intel chip... It has made my time on the internet really limited. Usually around this time, for whatever reason, the internet and searching is more available... in the morning not hardly at all.
My wife is concerned because we bought two new computers at the same time, but she does not experience the problems I have. But she also did not update the Adobe flash... I think that had something in it that affected this chip thing. I will not try to sound like I fully understand this, again, my time on the web is limited.
With the basic holiday season over and most people going back to work tomorrow; I think I have a chance to go out to a few of our local computer stores and see about buying a new system. If I understand this problem, Intel is at fault and will correct it... but frankly, I am not holding my breath about taking my computer somewhere whenever they make this repair available... so it looks like another computer in my office for now. My wife has offered her computer if we get closer to this starting... if things seem out of control; I may back out. I some how doubt this will happen... but just in case, at least you know why!

Do we have enough pirates willing to set sail together 20 shipmates on board...

Chapter 2
Aside from the gentle creaking of the bulkheads, Percival could hear nothing as he crept through the narrow passageways from the port berth. Horace had left about half an hour ago, and the others waited a few minutes apiece for their turn. Percival was one of the last in the berth to leave. Percival began to sweat as the cargo bay drew closer, expecting to be intercepted by one of the Spanish sailors. But none came.
- - - - -
"Back to work!"
Percival fell to the deck as the taskmaster prepared another strike with the whip. Another of the irregulars stood to his defense.
"He didn't deserve that! Ye know well as anyone that we're doing the best we can!"
"You'll regret that insubordination, rat!" The taskmaster turned to his challenger, whip at the ready. Horace smiled as the whip came down, flinching only slightly as he caught the flying strap and it wrapped tightly around his fist. The taskmaster stared aghast as the whip tore out of his hand.
"My turn." Horace stared the task master in the eyes as he picked up the handle.
"I will never yield to you!" The taskmaster drew his sword, and charged at Horace. The whip wrapped around the blade. Undeterred, the taskmaster continued on, driving sword and whip together into Horace's chest.
"Stop!" A booming voice rang. Gasping for breath, Captain Salvador Cortez stood a short distance away, pale in horror. Horace collapsed to the deck as Salvador approached. He stared up at the Captain with malice in his eyes.
"Your time will come..." Horace sputtered, coughing up a mouthful of blood. As Horace struggled to speak again, Salvador looked about, shaking in fear. There was no taskmaster. Salvador looked down, to see the bloody sword in his hand.
With a jolt, he awoke, dripping with sweat.
- - - - -
"At last, yer here safe." Horace grinned as Percival entered the cargo hold, and motioned towards a small barrel. Percival took a seat, next to several other crewmates who had already arrived. There were nearly twenty people in the hold, Horace included. Percival gulped as he wondered how so few could make any difference. Horace's expression as Percival glanced his way seemed to suggest that Horace heard his thoughts. A moment later, another irregular arrived, and Horace motioned for the group's attention.
"The time has come for us to make a move..." Horace spoke softly, only to be drowned out by others who shouted.
"Down with th' Cap'n!"
"He's betrayed us all!"
"Silence! Ye want the guards t' hear?" Horace stamped a foot on the deck, and the crowd fell silent. "Yer correct, we have suffered much since our Cap'n turned on us so suddenly those months ago. But things are ready to change. We'll make our move on Salvador himself tomorrow night."
Percival gulped. "You mean this is..."
"Mutiny." Horace smiled. "Let's go over the plan."
- - - - -
"Nightmares again, Captain?"
Salvador grimaced as he struggled to focus on the speaker. "Let me up..." Salvador barely got the words out as he felt himself being pushed gently back into his bed.
"In your condition, best to keep resting." A soft voice spoke in reassuring tones, but Salvador heard only malice. "I've brought you a little food, and something to drink to calm your nerves."
"No... drink..." Salvador was once again interrupted, this time by the stale taste of old food. The Captain struggled, only to resign as he felt himself forced to swallow.
"Can't have you dying on me, not just yet. Wouldn't be right, would it, Captain?"
"Stop this... please..." Salvador mumbled.
"Soon, I promise."
Salvador's lips pursed together tightly as the speaker approached him with a cup in hand.
"Time to drink."
- - - - -
"The swords are in the galley as planned, and I've stolen some of the first mate's sleeping draught the cook sets aside." A scrawny irregular smiled as he finished, and Horace patted him on the back.
"Excellent work as always, Sam."
"It's going to work." Sam continued. "I slipped a sample into the cook's rum while he was preparing the Captain's grub, and he was sleepin' for hours." Sam handed Horace a vial. Horace took it, staring at it for a second as he handed it to another man.
"You remember your part, Gaius?" Horace inquired.
"Of course! I slips away at high noon when you distracts the taskmaster, and makes sure the guard at the armory has a good afternoon nap." Gaius grabbed the vial, and hid it in a coat pocket.
"And where do we take the powder kegs?" Horace continued.
"To the berth, where they hides until sundown!" Someone else responded.
"Very good." Horace smiled. "The distraction to draw away the guards is taken care of, now let's talk about how we get those swords from the galley, and how we'll get to Salvador's cabin..."
- - - - -
This was all wrong. All the sailors reassigned to the starboard berths so the irregulars would not be caught planning their mutiny. The command staff kept in the dark. And Carlos, keeping a safe distance, biding his time. Diego had to do something. Constantly looking over his shoulder as he crept about, he made his away past a few tired patrols and approached the Captain's cabin. Light flickered through a curtained window. Diego cautiously approached, stopping in his tracks as he heard Carlos' voice inside. He hurried away, scrambling for a hiding place as Carlos emerged from the cabin, and made his way towards the bow.
Waiting for what seemed like hours, Diego was finally certain he was alone. To his initial surprise, the door to the Captain's cabin was unlocked. A chill ran down his spine as he realized why.
The creaking of the floorboards made him jump as he approached the Captain's tiny berth. Inside, Salvador lay motionless. Diego began to relax as he noticed the Captain was still breathing, even if slowly. Diego stood over his Captain, staring at what remained of the man.
"I'm sorry, Capitan."
Salvador gave no response. Diego reached over towards Salvador's face, as if to straighten up his disheveled hair. A strong odor caught his attention, and he looked over at the tray next to Salvador's bed. Diego grabbed the empty cup. Confusion turned to anger as he recognized the smell of Carlos' sleeping draught. "For the nightmares," Carlos always said. Finally, Diego realized whose.
His heart skipped a beat as he heard Carlos' voice nearby, calling for him. In a panic, Diego ran for a nearby window, wrenching it open as he heard Carlos' footsteps approach. As he quietly closed the window behind him and clung to the hull of the ship, Diego whispered softly.
"I'll stop him, Capitan."

Surprise! I be changin' one thing from me previous voyages. There be no rule against more than one chapter a round, and yer Captain will write whenever he feels like it!
That brings me to another thing I wish to discuss, and maybe ye noticed. That not only be this a voyage fer twenty seafarin' skallywags, but each round be fer two days. I wish to do it this way, so all of ye have more time in yer busy days to come here and sail with me, and so I has more time to write more of me story for ye when the feeling strikes. If this be too long, I apologize, and will consider shorter rounds fer me later voyages, if ye sails with me again.

I saw the two days Captain, I be okay with that for this one. Me think the only problem with this sail is keeping track. Me thinks the Boss and Wolf games need better news; some way the system tells us when new posts come into play. Been discussed before, but the Master of the Seas does not seem to think this is worthy of keeping the interests up! I only mention this again... just in case.
Looking forward to tomorrow... sure how access fer me be easier 24 bells a day!

AT&T came by yesterday and spent over 2 hours here, most of that time at the phone box on the corner. He came back and said it was a big mess in there and had to re-route my phone lines to another contact point and that this would cause some of the problems with our internet service. I have noticed it is better today. I also did buy a new computer, I am looking at it, and before the day is over I will hook it up.

braingle01... for a 20 person game, and I admit it has been a while since I played in one... it has a lot to do with the players and the way the voting goes. Some folks will be mandatory the first round; sort of like guamgirl2 just pointed out. We all get busy and when a game does not fill quickly, we tend to forget we signed up. First problem with this is that if the boss is one of them; we have a reset. The boss is fired, and we are back to a group of 19.
I believe the first two rounds, the boss is able to fire up to 4 players. This can only happen with a majority vote on someone NOT the boss, or a Mo0 vote where no one votes for someone that someone else has voted. After the second, maybe the third round, the boss can only fire 3... under the same rules. This will be the bosses maximum firing for a few rounds; I think the system jumps in and figures out the math, I suspect by round 5 we are down to 2 firings.
Ten rounds is probably the maximum... my memory thinks most 20 person games went 8-9. I am okay with someone else piping in on this. No offense Radio, but it has been a long time since I have been on a 20 person game. I actually have been looking forward to playing a 20 person game with a drunken Captain!
